Getting rid of a fiberglass boat

I picked up a load of scrap from some folks who are renovating a house as rental property. It has a couple of boats out back on trailers with most of the outboard motor intact, etc. They asked me if I wanted to haul them off, but I was a little hesitant as I could get a good bit of metal from the boats, including the trailer and motor, but I do not know the best way to get rid of the fiberglass part of the boat. Any suggestions?

A skill saw would also work. Personally I would use my chain saw, it would make a bigger mess. Seriously, wear long sleeve shirt, gloves, etc. Fiberglass in the pours of the skin is irritating. If you get it on your skin, take a cold shower. Hot water opens the pours allowing the fiberglass to work deeper. Cold water closes the pours. Good luck.

don't scrap the motors if they look like they can get running!

Hope you know that already. If you were closer I'd offer to buy depending on hp and brand.

should be some copper in there too to make it worth your while. might want to post a CL ad for a free boat otherwise. Someone might want to sink it in their pond or lake. Heck, they might even pay you a few bucks to deliver.

Would prefer to try to get rid of it intact if possible.

list it on craigslist for free. you would be amazed what people want as "yard decorations" and "children's playground/playhouse" items...

My brother had a boat at his weekend lake lot, along with a little camping trailer. He used to get out there on weekends, but times change and he didn't have much time to. The neighborhood changed too, and filled up with druggies. They stole the boat motor, by sawsawin out the whole transom, and burned the trailer. He gets a notice from (wouldn't ya know) the neighborhood association, that it was an eyesore and he'd get fined unless it was cleaned up.

He bought new tires, a tag, and light kit for the trailer, took his own sawzall and cut the boat in half, loaded the boat onto the now flat and scorched trailer frame, and towed it all up here, where he parked it behind Dads old place, and dumped (haha, left) it there : D

a few years later I decided the trailer might be worth re-purposing, and got his blessing to clean up the junk (I'd already cleaned up one of his tires, it's now the spare on mine ; )

They were having one of those neighborhood cleanup days at the county dump(which otherwise takes only brush), and with a water bill from town you could bring anything but tires or batteries. I got a water bill from town and loaded up my trailer with a pile of excess plastic, trash cans full of old broken bottles, even a few stray CRT tubes in TV shells, and then the two piece boat on top.

It had some goodies still on it. The pulley system, SS attachments like rope ties and such, tie down eyes, etc.

I took off down country dirt roads, wondering if they'd even let me through the gate, but, there wasn't anybody even at the gate. I followed an old dirt path through the fields until finding a huge pile of trash, with a number of guys running around, one directed me where to unload, they even helped. They'd been joking about needing a boat, well, they had it now. We threw it all out the back and I started to leave but passed a man I knew who was bringing in a dump truck, loaded with trash, that had a shiny new looking SS double sink right on top, with the faucets and all. I asked what was wrong with it, he said absolutely nuthin! After he dropped the load, I grabbed the sink and took off.

They never even asked to see the water bill : D

Where I'm at, as long as the boat wasn't ever registered in NV we can take them to the dump whole. If it was I just scrap off the reg. And they don't say anything. They sit at my house until its full of trash then I take it to the dump tho.

Are these big boats? I can see just stripping them and running the fiberglass hulks to the dump if they, say, under 14'. The dump guys would also tell you what the maximum size they would take if you have to chunk it up.

Could you flip them on CragsList to someone who wants a fixer-upper? (Maybe keep the motors?) Not sure of boat ownership laws...is it similar to cars in your part of the world?

Why are we scrapping the boats? I get several a year and I tak them to the auction and they sell for way more than scrap value.

What auction is that? Maybe there is one around here. The motors are there but incomplete, the boat looks to be watertight, but the interior would need a bit of work to get into shape, not to mention I have no idea about what condition the steering is in.

They are average size you might see someone skiing or fishing with.

That is an idea, after being mostly stripped (leaving chrome on glass etc for looks) can put them on craigslist with the suggestion it could be used for a raised garden. I saw a Mercedes body used that way at a car wash near where I use to work.

Give her cement boots...Eh, dats da CHiCAAAAGO in me talkin'. Ive actually wondered about the same question ,especially if it has a cracked haul or something. I would ask maybe a boat storage yard or boat sales place what they do to discard old one that cant be fixed.

Btw has anyone besides me been on a sinking boat? Its really jacked up man... Not as bad as survuvng a plane crash but pretty **** close. Its a sinking feeling pun intended.
