    Aluminum 6061 & 6063 difference

Taking some aluminum to the yard today. When i take extruded in they always ask is it 6061 or 6063. Any easy way to Tell?
I Figured certain things like Window frames are 6063.
Also what do you Call those thick aluminum blocks they cut with the cnc machine? MLC aluminum?
Thanks in advance for your help.

There is not much of a difference, they are both alloyed with magnesium and silicon. I believe 6063 is preferred for cold forming and machining over 6061.

In the scrap industry 6063 and extrusion are synonyms 6061 has to be e known alloy, marked, or shot with a nikon.

MLC, or mixed low copper is a generic term for most any alloy, but very clean, normally cutoffs and punchings from manufacturing processes, MLC is often refereed to as CLIP because it is clippings from whole plate

if you know what alloy you have you should be able to get a better price, if you have quantity, it doesn't do anyone any good to have 10 pounds of 5052 for sell, it will end up in the mlc, or even old sheet

Solid aluminum heat sinks are 6063, any with copper will sell about the same as AL/Cu rads depending on the yard and their market

If you can meet the requirements for tooth, 6061 should pay better by a little bit.

Tooth SEGREGATED NEW ALUMINUM ALLOY CLIPPINGS AND SOLIDS
Shall consist of new, clean, uncoated and unpainted
aluminum scrap of one specified aluminum alloy
with a minimum thickness of .015” (.38 mm) and to
be free of hair wire, wire screen, dirt and other nonmetallic
items. Oil and grease not to total more than
1%. Also free from punchings less than 1/2” (1.27 cm)
    in size.
