    Separating Aluminum Questions

I've been wondering if there is more than 1 type of aluminum category, and if so, how is it defined?
How do you seperate your Al? Obviously clean/dirty, but for clean, are does it all go together, regardless of size?
And are Al heatsinks clean? I remember reading somewhere that they are considered dirty/ mixed?
    Thank you in advance!

Aluminum - There is Sheet, Cast and Extruded. Cast is breakable. Sheet is bendable. Extruded is a manufacturing process where the aluminum is pushed through a form rather than being poured in a mold.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    Separating Aluminum Questions

Great question. As to my knowledge, theres Aluminum 6061, & 6063. As to the differences, im not too sure. I gurantee someone here would know. But the list for aluiminum is quite long as to the other types of steel. For example, theres aluminum turnings from a mill, too aluminim clips. As to if a yard pays different prices for that, youd have to call your yard.

My yards like evrything seperated. Sheet and cast need to be in seperate bins, but still pays the same. Extruded is the highest value aluminum and if it's dirty, it can be mixed together. Your yard may be different though.

You may refer to zinc . Which I sell as sheet but a picker will notice and say nothing. They just give a lower price . Review your ticket before you sign and say wtf I'm not selling that. Should have told me. Then sell to another less strict yard. IMHO . Zinc the other aluminum lol.

Alum sheet, Alum extr, Irony Extr, Cast alum, Alum siding, Painted Alum sididng, Litho sheets, MLC, Alum Wheels, Alum wire, Ins Alum wire

At my yard I use. Extr heatsinks go as MLC if clean (No pins, paint, screws,or no pieces of ciructboard)
Flat or Dirty Extr heatsinks go as sheet Alum. All yards vary

List of categories for aluminum is mind boggling but if you narrow it down to what Mick said you should be fine. If you don't separate, your load will go as the lowest grade in the mixture.

Most yards do not want you to mix zinc/die cast with aluminum your load will be downgraded.

Ya I figured it would be downgraded, wouldn't wanna risk an extra few cents for a possible large loss

I do not separate Ali anymore except for cans
the mixed price is good enough for me. time saved sorting and cleaning and dropping off is worth 2-4 cents a pound.
Although if it was slower or had accumulated mass amounts, I would separate it. Generally when the dishwasher tubs are full, they go.

Most yards at least seperate it into cast and sheet. Some have more categories. There are many many many categories that could be used, but its kinda pointless in a small yard to have 15 different aluminum bins.

Next time you are there, talk to the Non ferrous guys about how they want aluminum sorted. Maybe they will show you some of the stuff they have sorted in bins already.
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.
