I hate those and they usually end up in the shred pile

I think that is the tv tuner. Someone gave me a 5 pound box of unused ones, and I haven't figured what to do with it yet.
I have the same question I have some simular thats higher grade with trace gold and chips.
Same size same metal around and green on both sides. I can't figure out how to get my pictures from my gallery to the post im using a tablet
I think your right, it does the fine tuning for the "channels", that is why it is shielded. The older ones have lead around the sides that the tin top snaps down on.
I thinks it's called an RF Tuner

You might be able to get copper-bearing price for some of it.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.
an if their not on tv boards, what are they called? If there is even a name. Not sure why anyone would hate them, pair of channel locks, an they pop right off, an the metal pulls right on out of the board.
I always like popping the metal casing top off, when it comes to other then tv boards, never know what you'll find inside.

They are indeed RF tuners, as Mech stated. I personally don't bother harvesting anything from them, just throw them in with my other low grade boards. On a side note, the quote Sirscrapalot referenced is one of my favorites. Thanks for posting that one good Sir.
i always pop them open and look them over,,95 percent of the time they are low grade but i have found 1 or 2 that had real nice green boards with ic chips and gold traces on them...the ones i have found with good boards are usually not connected to the main board with solder like the others i generally come across, they usually plug into the main board with one or two plugs, the pins on the ones ive found that were good were also gold plated..
i am not sure but if i am remembering correctly the good ones i have found were in tivo's or dvr machines....all the ones i find that are brown or green and brown, i just throw into shred
