I know my local yard shreds our misc metals/appliances and loads a semi and it goes to Steel Dynamics. They say they are one of the largest steel processing companies. They're large enough that they bought Omni Source, one of the larger scrap processing companies in the Midwest. I guess they blend the shred back into new.

Some of the "scrap" that we sell is used for domestic purposes. A large amount is sold overseas and helps lower a large accumulating trade deficit with China. In 2011 the combined scrap products was $1 billion more than our soybeans exported to China ($11.3 billion in scrap and $10.4 billion soybeans). Soybeans was our "Official" #1 export in 2011, as each category of scrap is listed separate, with copper being number 4 at $3.4 billion to China. In 2013 we had a record trade deficit with China of $318 billion. The scrap industry is a key US strategy to lowering that growing deficit! So scrap on.
