lawn tractor

ive got an old lawn tractor sitting in the garage and I am beginning to clean out the garage. would it be worth it to bring the tractor in for shred or should i spend a few hours and drain the trans and take it apart. I believe that the trans case is made from aluminum and its not light. also do you guys know if the engine blocks on briggs and strats are made of aluminum or iron?

also



there is an ad on craigslist that posts about free pallets up to 20 40x48 pallets every day, would it be worth my time to go and pick the pallets up to recycle? anybody know what pallets are going for right now?

There's no place around me to recycle pallets so it depends on if you feel it's worth to go pick them up. As for the tractors I have no clue if their aluminum or cast, I think their aluminum but not sure as I haven't messed with any in a while.

The place that I would pick the pallets is 3 miles down the street from the place that pays for the pallets

If you have a truck and can make money, why not?

Out here, though, there is no pallet recycling place. I only take what I can use.

As for the lawn tractor, I'd take it in as shred. I can't see there being enough aluminum to be worth the effort.

Im not sure about that, The entire trans case is made out of what appears to be aluminum + an engine block on a 14HP briggs and stratton

Huh, apparently their engines are aluminum with cast iron sleeves. (Is my engine a cast iron engine).

Iam learning that there are buyers on cl that will pay better than scrap value for mowers and such.
Pallets around me sell for $1-$5 if the buyers are buying. Good luck!

Realistically speaking, this is a question you can better answer for yourself. Call them and find out what they pay, then make the determination for yourself if it is worth your time. An initial post on the introduction page would have been nice too, instead of starting with question immediately on pallets that you could answer for yourself.

Personally, I try to answer my questions myself before asking them on the forum. Experience is the best teacher.

All I know was that mine was downgraded. The tractor I took apart was a really old Lawn King. After I took it all apart, it didn't seem worth the effort.

Your mileage may vary.

I can brake down a tractor in about 30 minutes to an hour. Depends how spread apart my tools are. The trans comes out with like six bolts and then comes apart with like 8 and two snap rings. After that you just need a putty knife to scrape some of the grease out of it. I never let that big piece of aluminum it the shred. Its just to easy for ME.

Dangle a magnet around the engine and you'll will get a good idea of what's al and what's not. I think I agree that it won't be worth your time, unless you have nothing else to do. Not trying to be rude there, just sharing the opinion of someone who never has enough time to break everything down to it's most basic parts (stupid day job!)

I go to school and come home and just sit around or go drive around looking for scrap so I don't have anything better to do
