Experienced Scrapper
My scrap yard doesn't take complete TVs. I have to get the copper out myself. My problem is, nobody wants to stuff that's left over. I could get it picked up by the garbage company, but they want more money than I'm pulling out of the copper.
I have no idea what to do here.

Even though the garbage company may be technically "legal" (It'll depend on where you are), I would strongly advise against it. Even if a CRT can be landfilled, taking one apart makes them hazardous waste in a lot of cases, which opens up a pretty large DEQ/EPA can of worms.
Depending on how many you have, you may have a small problem, or a really huge one!

I wouldn't worry about it. A lot of people on these forums keep freaking out about CRTs. I drive by a tv sitting out by the road everyday. Even empty tubes. Everyone does it here, there are no way of enforcing it.

Maybe there is a reason we're "freaking out".
I for one care, as I don't wish to step on the glass from one, due to some tweeker fool smashing the glass to get to the copper, or some kid having fun an thinking it's cool to smash the glass, an again..end up being a mess for everyone else.
That may fly up in Michigan, but it doesn't down here on my sandbar.
Some may not care about tv's sitting on the curb, or broken up an sitting there. They are nothing but a nuisance an a blight on your city/town when just left to sit there. Here on my sandbar the trash guys don't take nothing not in the can. We do have a way to recycle our tv's tho..Properly. Not just leaving it to be someone elses problem.
Why am I repeating myself? I've said this before, but it's just chalked up to "freaking out". I'll remember to send my vet, or doc bills for me or mine stepping on glass. Since it's such a trivial thing.
Oh an a lot of people smoke crack, do meth, cheat on their loved ones,etc...I for one am not a lemming. Just cause everyone else does it, doesn't make it right. Let me repeat that in big bold letters...Just because everyone else does it, doesn't make it right.
A lot of yards will rip you off, but it's ok..everyone is doing it!

oh..an to the OP.
If you can't handle the glass properly...move on to something else to scrap. Harsh I'm sure..I'll leave being nice an sweet to others.

Thankfully, here in NC, the county dump sites still take them free of charge. They have an electronics recycling area where people pile up TVs, computers, microwaves, and other e-waste. I went the other day and traded out 2 TVs for 3 Direct TV boxes and a DVD player....not bad. I know the guy that runs the dump site pretty good. I asked him what the county does with the CRTs, and he said that, for now, they just have a huge pile at the land fill until they figure out what to do with them. I gut my CRTs and put the case back on. I might slip up and break the glass in one out of a hundred.

the county landfill in nc takes them if they are personal use. try to roll in with a twenty foot trailer full and palletized crt tvs like i did and see how quick you are charged for drop off hahaha

It's really not about the guvmin't and not getting caught.
It's about the choices you make. You can choose to be selfish and leave a trail of toxic waste in your wake for somebody else to deal with -or- you can choose to be a stand up guy, take responsibility, and do the right thing.
Both choices have consequences .... some good .... some bad.
Either way ... what goes around eventually comes around. There's no way to escape it.

Oddly enough, no one here(Onondaga County) enforces NY's E-Waste law that was passed Jan 1st. Someone had a console tv sitting out by their driveway and it sat there for a month before it disappeared. There's no point in creating laws if no one enforces em. My suggestion to anyone that still handles CRTs are to either recycle them correctly or don't b*tch about it. It's one of many topics I've stopped talking about because they've been ran into the ground like a Commodore computer.

This is a classic mistake of a new, uneducated, or D- G-A S (don't give a shi**) scrounger, with no care or common sense, that gives us all a bad name. and why we have such ridicules EPA regs.
why dosen"t the Gov. take some of the millions given to countries that hate us, or some of the Billions spent on useless illegal wars and solve this problem.
This would be a good time to test the power of this forum and its members to petition a senator or the U.N. to find a solution to this problem we know there is recoverable material in CRTs, and we also know there is a way to recycle them we just need the recourses in the proper area. If the governments or the tree huggers really cared they would find a solution.
They found a way to listen and keep track of every single person on the planet and rule the weather for gods sake. Sry for the rant. This is a post and a response really piss** me off.

I see where you are coming from and understand you reasoning and commend you for being one of those who attempted to help solve the problem. Maybe this is the time to talk about a dirty big secret and find a real solution other then the usual government solution of throwing out restrictive, useless laws or regulation.
Lead is at a dollar a pound how much lead is in a crt and how hard can it be to find an economical , safe way to recover it.
It can't be any harder or more expensive then starting a new lead mining project. Lead is here it's time to find a way to deal with it instead avoiding the issue and using regulation to sweep it under the rug. mcw
