New to scrapping and have a few questions

hello all I am new here and have a few questions about some stuff that has to do with scrapping. We're short on money in my house hold. Mom and dad are disable disability and social security just aren't cutting it these days. I've been saving same scrap for a while and picking up random things. Washer/dryers, gas pool heater and some other things. We have a very old house with a old oil boiler. We haven't used the boiler in 10-15 years. Our house is very small and we use space heaters now for heat. Oil has already been disconnected and capped off. Would if be worth my time to take this boiler apart. I see a motor and pipping. Also would it be worth it to take all the pipping running to the baseboard heat? We don't use the heat and don't plan on it in the future. Costs to much and house needs an update anyway if it was to ever be sold or anything else. So it would be switched out later if I wanted to hear a different way.

    Hey there,
Those are some great questions and hopefully recycling some metal can help you and your family out a little bit. The best way to get started is to search the vast resources here, as there are some really great threads dedicated to just your situation. After you have read other great tales of boiler taming, pop on back and ask any specific questions you might have about your situation specifically. Good luck, Happy reading!

I have to agree that you will learn a lot from reading the old threads on here. It will teach you a lot that will help you make some money.

As far as the boiler goes, I would probably recommend not to take it out. Even if you never use it, should the time come that your family wants or needs to sell the house, if it has no heating system in it, there will be a problem. I would seriously look into local laws where you live regarding this. Remember that having no plans to use something is not the same as never needing it.

I don't think an oil burner would be any kind of bonanza. It is most likely steel through and through. Copper, brass and aluminum just wouldn't stand up to the temps and stress of a closed loop oil heating system. I would say that harsas has a pretty good idea when he says to leave it in place.

IF you decide to get rid of the boiler, selling it on Craigslist will bring more money than scrap. advertise it as a waste oil burner conversion candidate. guys buy these and convert them to burn waste motor oil. there are some sites that show how it is done and sell the conversion nozzle and heated supply and different burner head. I looked into this myself and found that it has driven the price of the used fuel oil furnaces way up (used to be people gave them away, now they go for $200-$400).

but if it were me, I would not get rid of a main heating supply and rely on expensive space heaters without some other form of backup.

Well the basement flooded twice in last 10 years. I pulled off the front this morning and part of the side. Talk about tons of calcium buildup from all the floods. This thing is completely shot. House will never sell. It's left in will for me and I've already decided a long time ago it's going to be leveled. Land right now is worth more than the house. There's mold problems in house, roofs some what on, foundation isn't the best, concrete stairs outside are slowly falling apart. Basically the house for me as I'm older and get it. Is not worth my time or effort to keep or redo the house. If house was to be inspected to sell. It would never pass. It's old and no where up to code as far as electrical wires in the wall and so on and so forth. I'd waste more money gutting the house and having to build another one lol. So it's definitely coming out of the basement at some point. It's big takes up room and isn't efficient so it won't be used that's for sure. I'd rather not say but they each have a timeline of 5 years. So id rather strip and help as much as I can now. Guy who built house split property in two and just built the houses. The other house that was on property was sold a few years ago and had to be torn down and redone because of code standards now. When house was built wasn't many and weren't as strict.

Space heaters have cut the bill in half as far as heating goes for the house. Rooms aren't big at all. And that's comparison to what it used to cost to heat 10-15 years ago by keep house on 85 f all year long. Some reason dad likes it super warm. But my cost to heat with a little tiny 10.00 space heater doesn't cost me much at all monthly.

Wow a house like that at 85 degrees, probably no insulation, would be expensive to heat. In that case, you're right, small zone heating is probably better. hell, wrap yourself in an electric blanket and use a long extention cord, LOL...

sorry for your houses condition, yeah, strip it in pieces in the basement so you can haul it up the stairs bit by bit...

Haha yes barely insulation and space heaters have been the best. Parent stay to their room 95% of the day. Rooms Prob no bigger than 20x15 I know the other room is 10x12. When I cook lunch and stuff oven keeps kitchen warm and space heaters are great for the 2 rooms. No one uses the living room or small dining room. To be really honest I had more room and insulation and everything else in my double wide and apartment I've rented over the years. Just needed to move back home to be with the parents while I still can. And for the house mortgage is about 3000.00 a month. So for all repairs for mold, sealing basement, insulation, roof and getting up to code won't be worth my time in future. My plans are level house and sell lot, or sell as whole later and pay off what's rest of house if I can find someone who wants to level and rebuild. It's on about half an acre in NJ. Here property is where your money is at. I've also taken into account my parents are very behind on mortgage a few months. Pay what they can when they can. But since I plan on leveling house if I get it before bank does. Figured if bank takes before I can get I might as well take it out now. Ban won't need it and I won't either.

You have a good yard near you at least. Klein Recycling in Hillsborough. Pretty good prices there. And in a few weeks when the college kids go home, you can get plenty of goodies from New Brunswick just sitting on the side of the road.

Yea I'm about 10 mins from kleins and m&a there around the corner from one another. I call each and take best prices for day. I will be going by Rutgers soon I get tons of stuff I can re eBay like electronics and so forth that actually work. I do it on the side with dumpster diving. Get some valuable stuff. I'm literally right off 287 easton ave if u know that.
