    Question Question regarding store shelving

Hey this is my first thread, I've been reading for a little bit before joining and am fairly new to recycling..

I came across the opportunity to take several hundred shelves from an outlet store that is closing down for a remodel. I did a magnet test and it is ferrous. I have never done a spark test, and I do not have access to an angle grinder for a few more days. My question is if anyone can help me identify what these shelves could be made from, possibly from previous experience with something similar, and what I would be looking at for a scrap price. I have tried to search through the forums for 'store shelving' 'shelves' and some other similar keywords but couldn't really find what I was looking for. The main reason I am coming here for advice is because I have the opportunity to get double or triple the amount that I have gotten already, but I will have to either get them or not get them before I have the ability to do a spark test. I currently have the shelves listed on craigslist also to see if I could get anywhere that way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

...It wouldn't let me upload pictures or links since I am a new user, not sure if this will work but this is a link to the craigslist with pictures of the shelves: pennstate.craigslist.org/bfs/5010305050.html

Most likely they are steel. If for some reason they were say in a walk in fridge or freezer than they could be stainless steel. It would be dirty stainless as you noted that a magnet sticks to it. Some where on here is good info on spark test

Thank you, now another question - the yard closest to me currently has dirty stainless listed at .01 per pound... does this price fluctuate frequently? I figure at .01 cents a pound I've probably done a hell of a lot more work than the 30 dollars I'd get at .01. Just wondering if I held on to it for a month or two if it may go up more

They're steel. Advertise them as gondola shelves. Also contact any local commercial fixture stores to see if they are interested.

I imagine there price is more for regular steel than Dirty SS, if that's the case then throw it in the reg. pile. Did a quick Google search.

I'd take photos before you take them down if possible, and try to sell them. Small retail stores always need shelving.

He's right. Retail stores are feeling the pinch of slow business. I bet a smaller retail store would pay something for those shelves at a decent price. I had a friend dig 5 boxes of security plastic cases out of the trash from block buster when they went under. He put them on Craigslist and sold them three weeks later to Lost Prevention at Kmart.

Plus, used shelving is hard to find. It took me 6 months to find good shelving before I could expand my office at the start of 2014. New stuff is crazy on pricing, and the used stuff never seems to be for sale.

If the price is right, I'd give that a shot. If not, I have some shelving just like that, and it's steel.

you can probably get cast iron price for the uprights depending on your yard as those are really heavy duty. The actual shelves will go as light iron.

You can try to sell them but i wish you luck. Usually when a store remodels they start with whatever is in the worst condition and normally nobody wants to buy that second hand. Also stuff like that is a pita and expensive to ship it need be

Why would any yard count this as cast iron. Best case would most likely be #2 steel if your yard has that category. #2 is 1/8" up to, but not including 1/4" thick. 1/4" and over is #1.

As has been mentioned and if you have the storage space, try to resell for more than scrap value. I just completed a job with over 200 shelve units. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time or space for resale.

From working in a grocery/drug store, Some can be Alum but very rarely. Also like Hobo said, their is stainless shelves too. Most likely from meat freezers. But 98% of the time they are steel

    Hobo,
    plate and structural????
I tried getting 2 yards to do this for old coal car rails. Similar to train track, just smaller. Neither one would.

getting lucky as a new yard is paying for different grades of steel, when before all peddlers got shred... So far gotten sheet iron (shred), clean sheet iron, prepared and the P&S torch (bed frame rails and long steel poles). Other yards are now offering the same, better for us scrappers, if we have the space to separate, sort and store! LOL
