Reading Old Threads and Using SMF Search Feature.

I have been here for about a month. I'm on here everyday because I just love to learn all that I can about anything new I delve into.

I have been reading old threads. I utilized the search. I'm going to openly say that the search does not work the way it should.

I get tired of seeing the same responses to newbie questions stating to use the search. Unless a poster ... (now this is important) ...
Unless the thread starter adds Tags to a post, it will not show up in search.

For example, I just clicked on Advanced Search at the top of page and typed in vcr I click search and SMF says there are no results to match my search.

So let's all lay off chastising those that get frustrated in not finding answers. Maybe we can all be more diligent about adding tags so that searches do actually return the results were looking for as well.

I just tried using the advanced search tab and couldn't get it to do anything.

I think it might be broke again, probably from all the newbies doing searches.

    I'm just kidding!!!

I like to use the Google custom search. I've had a lot of luck using that in the past.

I just typed in VCR's and got 138 results about scrapping VCR's that came from threads at the SMF.

I have a tip that may help: you can use the site syntax in Google to filter results for you. Like this:

    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q...lforum.com+VCR

Just replace VCR with whatever you want. The Google search does a much better job in my mind.

As I recall three letter words did not work in the past. So "VCR" won't work and "VCR's" will work at least that was the way it worked 3+ years ago. Mike

That seems to do the trick. I still want to promote the use of tags as I think the results will be more relevant that way.

It goes both ways, I have spent hours searching google advance search, looking for answers when all I have is questions. Come to SMF, enter into search, read some old threads and start finding my answers in minutes. Sometimes it goes just the opposite, then again it's all how you you ask a question (hint).
