Question

Anyone here scrap wood pallets. I always see pickup trucks loaded with them. If so how much do you get for them?

A girl i went school with does it. I am in NJ they are all over the place. She asked me about it so i set her up with a few people i know and she's doing well. Getting $2-$5 per pallet. she was telling me in about a week she made about $250-$60 for gas. She scraps too, her boyfriend works for a moving company so he gets a lot of stuff.

Yea that's what I thought. But what kinda place buys them?

Ahhhh....... You have just sparked me up. I forgot all about this trade. I need to find the buyers around here for them. I am seeing offers for free pallets around here on freecycle and Craig'slist quite a bit. Unfortunately, that may mean that there are no buyers around here.

Shipping companies would be the buyers of these I believe.

Be careful, because near me they only by the high quality ones. If you get a truck load of cheap pallets, they are effectively just garbage.

I live near Fresno in central california and a lot of places here buy used pallets. The farmers use them at their fruit packing sheds. There is a place near me that buys all pallets even the ones that are in bad shape . They take them apart and use whatever boards are O.K. to make new pallets. The owner told me that some of the larger fruit packing operations will need several hundred new ones a year. I know they were paying between $4-$7 each depending on how much of it can be used.

I used to know a guy that dealt with pallets after he was let go from a job. He started with a pickup truck and about 6 months later he paid cash for a 5 ton truck with a big flatbed. Took a lot of legwork in the beginning meeting with people, but he'd pick up pallets for free or for $1 - 2 each for real good ones. There are some standard sizes used for shipping and moving material on semi's. The oddball sizes and damaged ones would become donor pallets. He had storage in a big barn and did some repairs there. He would sell pallets to other factories by the stack or truckload for around $10. each. New pallets run somewhere around $35 to 55 dollars each. Never got into specifics with him about money but he always had a wad of cash big enough to choke a horse,,,Pallets get more expensive as trees disappear. That's all I know,,, Mike

I was wondering what company is it that your talking about in fresno?

Down here where I live there are several places that buy pallets. they fix them up and resell them. Around the bigger cities there is a big demand for them. I have never looked into selling pallets but it might be a good idea for when scrapping slows down. Some peole in my area,that's all they do is haul pallets. Industrial areas are good places to look for them, alot of companies just throw them away and would love for someone to come by and pick them up just to get rid of them.
