We call that Idiot Tax. Throwing money away, leaving money on the table and making mistakes that cost you money. Any good scrapper has paid idiot tax at some point. It's when you don't know enough about cleaning/sorting and making mistakes that cost you by earning you less when selling. Any scrapper worth his salt is always learning from the yard, other scrappers and the forum. The more you know about scrap, the less idot tax you pay.

It's aluminum. I picked some up from an electrician today along with about 40 pounds of copper wire and a bed load of conduit pieces.

Also some of the larger diameter conduit is aluminum.

Flex conduit is ether aluminum or steel always check with a magnet if the magnet dosn't stick and it feels heavy look in the end for wire in it. Unwrap the flex about 2in. clamp in a vice aand pull. Strip the wire and you will have bare bright #1 copper. Solid conduit can be steel (like a pipe) or it can be pvc (plastic). The flex in thr pitcher at the top of this thread is aluminum.

hoss, ive made alot of mistakes and im sure im gonna make more, what suprises me is that your yard unloaded 500lbs of this stuff for you and let you think it was steel, more times than i can count ive been corrected at the yard, sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worse. anyway i rarely get worked up or upset but they had to know just my opinion

My yard doesnt unload it for you, no yards here in ID do that. You get out and unload it.

Of course they let me do that. In their eyes, why pay me .25c when they can pay me .10? All about business.

And yes, idiot tax was paid. Ha, i like that.

Mech, yer somethin else. Yer like an old wise man. Always got somethin' to say, and you never really know what to say back. Kinda want to be a smartass, but, yer a wise old man, and kinda afraid.

I just wanted to clear something up. I'm a former electrician.

I saw some people say the flex sheathing is aluminum, some said it's steel, and some said it could be either. The latter is correct.

Someone said the hard conduit is always steel. They do make electrical conduit out of aluminum as well as stainless, and they are almost exclusively used in commercial and industrial applications, where a higher resistance to corrosion is needed.

The easiest way to get it out is to take the conduit and bend it. It will flex and then pop. Then cut any little bit left connected and slide it off the end. Rinse and repeat. All the goods without that giant springy ball of steel or aluminum.
