    Aluminum Ingots...?

Hello everyone, I'm new this industry and new to the forum,

My company just bought a majority stake in an overseas scrap yard that turns all of their metal into ingots. Our deal gave us the rights to their Aluminum Ingot, but I have no idea who to approach to sell them too, I assume the local scrap yards here in the U.S. have no use for ingots. Who buys Aluminum in Ingot form? What industry/companies should I contact?

? Really. any company that makes beer cans should be able to help you. Perhaps your company can buy a majority "take" in a overseas beer can maker too! Buy the scrap aluminum, turn that to aluminum ingots, make beer cans out of the ingots. Now you only need to buy a beer making company, then drink the beer, you "closed" the loop. "total recycling" is what your new company should be called!

I do see some points in Burt's response. I'd suggest looking into aluminum can/bottle plants and see if their in the market for purchasing the ingots. Might also want to seek out metal workers who would use the aluminum to make items.

AAint - Sassy? not intending to be so sassy, as a "little Guy" I like anything about recycling. I really like a good cold beer and just thought you might also like a beer too! Welcome to the forum and if I may be so "Sassy", a good place to start your introductions, would be the "Introduce Yourself" thread, again welcome to SMF.

My first question would be "which # of alum do you have access to? Check out this link.

if you have ingot in quantity you should be talking to Kaiser, Alcoa, Sapa, and Century Aluminum, anyone smaller and you are leaving money on the table.

if you don't have enough material talk to the biggest scrap companies you can DJJ, TMR, CMC, you know the "alphabet guys "

Time to research is best done before you spend a dime. Why would you buy something you intend to resell, and not have a clue who your customer base is?

    Anyway welcome to SMF.

What type of aluminum is it? Probably not a good time to be investing in an aluminum ingot maker as the aluminum mills in the USA are stockpiled out until at least December. Noticed your can price, cast price, wheels price and 6000 series price dropping? Multitude of supply and very little demand.

    Ok, noted.

In regards to #, the ingot our maker produces is ADC12. I'm not sure what series # it falls under.

ADC-12 is the ingot grade, not sure what the series is. As far as supply/demand, that stuff is always cyclical in the short term, demand will rise over the long term.

If anyone can fill me in on which series the following grades belong to, it would be much appreciated, I've had no luck trying with Google.
    ADC12
    AC4C
    LM6
    LM24

ADC12 - an alloy that's made up of Si,Cu,Mg,Zn,Mn,Fe,Ni,&Sn for metal work such as the creation of intake manifolds and engine blocks.
AC4C - an alloy that's made for use in weaving(so electrical wire possibly?)
LM6 - an alloy also used for weaving.
LM24 - an alloy that's made up of Si,Fe,Mg,Mn,Ni,Zn,Sn,Ti,& Pb. Wasn't able to find out what it's used in.

Hope that helps, found it on trade-metal.com since I don't think SMF has an aluminum grading table anywhere.

Good work on the applications. These are very specific Ingots. Your ADC12 would be used by MOST Aluminum possibly

Unless you have access to millions of lbs a month Kaiser, Sapa are not going to care. Alcoa produces its own primary aluminum so no matter what they wont care. Century is a producer of aluminum not a consumer of aluminum. You will need to find die cast shops or similar business to be able to sell to. And they will want spec ingot most likely not just ingots from melted scrap. if you cant make a spec ingot I would suggest talking to a secondary producer that can.

In most cases no one will buy ore, the ore needs to be enriched to a concentrate, to bring up the grades to a point where it is economical to ship and refine into a metal. Most ore is processed at the mine site into a concentrate and then shipped to various smelters and refiners. This is big business, very few small players in this business.

For lead and zinc, there is the Teck-Cominco smelter in Trail, BC, Canada. For copper, there is the Glencore smelter in Quebec, Canada. These are all I know of in North America. They won't be interested unless you have at least several hundred tonnes of concentrate. Minimum grades need to be 20-30%, and they are very specific with what kind of impurites are allowed and at what maximum concentrations. For example there are maximum allowable levels of things like arsenic in the concentrate, if your concentrate exceeds these levels, there will be a penalty deducted from the final payout. You need to get a good representative sample, and have it assayed, probably before you even talk to them.

I have a few questions to ask, if you don't mind.

What is the name of your company and where are you located/headquartered?

Where is the overseas scrap yard located?
