I'm taking apart this old Sony we've had for awhile now. It has been sitting in the backyard through winter, so it was exposed to the elements. I've heard there is something of an initial charge inside TVs like this. I took a picture to show you all what I'm talking about, so I can be careful. I've never done this before, and I'm kinda nervous.

If it's been sittin around that long unplugged yer good buddy. They hold a charge after you've plugged them in for about 48 hours. So i reckon you dont have anything to worry about.
By the way, that big green circuit board on top of that tube, pull that off. DONT try and twist it off, because more than likely you'll break the glass. Which is a no-no.

Breaking the tube glass doesn't do anything since it's a vacuum of air. You'll hear a big whoosh of air for a few seconds, then it's done. I usually cut all wires before removing the circuit board at the spearhead of the tube.
Also I've been told if you press the power button on/off a couple times, will release any electrical charge that may be still stored inside.

The tube glass is actually full of some sort of gas, thats harmful if inhaled. Thats why you dont break the glass, thats also why they are considered "hazardous waste".

There is no gas in the tube. That is why it is called a vacuum tube. There is a vacuum inside consisting of no gas, no air, nothing in that space at all. A sharp blow to the front will cause it to implode rather than explode.

It's considered hazardous waste because of the large amounts of Lead used in the glass. The Gov't doesn't want you to dump it because that lead may leech out into the soil or water table.

This post was so very helpful and especially the youtube video above. I kind of reminded me im being a lil to gentle with this crap i got a lot more done today on the tv's and microwaves i scrapped in less time. Which thanks again on both of those til i found this site i was turning down tv's and microwaves.

Ahhhh, thank you. Sorry for posting the confusion then. I always thought that when i used to go out and shoot em, the white "powder" id see flying out, was lead or something! Haha, now i know. Appreciate it.
