Television Question and help me learn about These green things

Hello Im more of a steel/aluminum guy but recently Ive noticed that the local land Fills no longer accept old style television sets. With more and more people unable to set them out on the curb and have them magically dissapear, there seems to be an over abundance of used TV's sitting around in the street, in the weeds, on craigslists free section and even in private construction dumpsters now. Are these things worth anything in the Escrap world? I normally just cut the cords and run but with there being so many around and no one really able to do anything about them I'm wondering If I can become the guy that this town needs to get rid of them if they are worth a darn.

Also please some body tell me what the hell this thing is and what I should be doing with things like this. It came out of what appears to be a control box connected to two hot tub pumps i found in a dumpster if that helps.

Those TV's are only worth it if you have a proper place to recycle the tube. i am lucky i do, so I still accept, although i do limit the size I pick up now.

Update: I kept clicking on similar threads and found the Answer to my first question, in video form even, but that leads me to the other question: what do I do with the back and front? Is the back a recyclable plastic (1-7)? And junksable where might i find a place to get rid of the front half? Also what should I do with those greenish colored soldered and silicon things? A junk yard I went to down near Ft. Hood used to buy them but at only 1 penny a pound more than steel with the lack of space I had down there to hoard **** (only the space in the back of my trucks) I never really cared about keeping them and would throw them either in the trash or in the steel pile depending on what they clang to. Is there a difference in types of these things or anything else i need to do to prepare them? Or can I just take them all in one pile in what ever condition I pull them out in? Hey SI, now this is all in my opinion that mainly pertains to the Midwest, well at least in Ill. as many states have different laws regarding CRT glass. before you pick up another one please know your laws about them, they should be on your local states EPA website. Around me, everyone is charging fees to accept CRT's for recycling, and I know that the big electronics store that is the best, doesn't take them in ILL and PA, so we both have issues there. I also just read and article yesterday that comes from California that said that CRT glass has a last ditch option to be landfilled in that state and the numbers where impressive. Yeah i was using google to look for places that accept the tubes around here. Currently all the places i found do charge fees. The back half on some of them is recycleable though so maybe theres money to be made with that? Currently since watching that video the other day ive been keeping a impact screw gun in my truck and when i find tv's instead of cutting the cord and leaving it there, i've been pulling the back off, getting all the good stuff out and leaving the two peices where they sit. Is it more annoying for the home owner? Maybe. But most of what i've seen is stuff thats been sitting out for weeks, or in a roll off box. I dont feel too bad about leaving the two halves on the curb since most of the time they'll just end up in the weeds or down a cliffside in about 3-4 weeks any how. At least i get the good stuff out before that happens. If some one wants me to take the glass i guess I could charge $50 if I'm gonna get hit for $30

Personally I think you should either take the whole TV and be a responsible scrapper or leave them alone. There are many more profitable things you could be scrapping besides TV's.

What do you suppose a cop would do if he/she saw you cherry pick parts from a TV and leave the rest on the side of the road.

I was leaving em be for awhile. But like every where you go around here they're starting to build up. Ive kept two to actually use but nobody wants em any more. Everybody feels they all need HD to watch their shows anymore and no one really feels like paying to get rid of em so they just set em out on the curb or put up a free craigslist add. If they dont go within about 1-4 weeks most people around here start getting creative in how they get rid of em. Ive already taken apart 4 of em in roll off boxes this week. But most end up the weeds or down a cliff regardless of weather or not i get the copper out. Theres one area here that looks like some one filled up a dump truck with em and dumped em in an abandoned driveway. I'd like to take the whole thing but i dont want to get stuck with a $30 bill for em. And this is just a small bit of what ive started this week. Normally I haul about 300-1,500lbs of steel and aluminum every day. Ive never messed with tv's before last week when i got tired of seeing them everywhere.

I'll agree that they are everywhere. The problem is that when you get through picking out what you want, they are still there. What are you going to do when you're pulling copper out of a truck load of TV's on an abandoned driveway and the police come rolling up on you?

I field strip alot of stuff and nobody usually bothers me. Sometimes people ask me about prices or what I do with the stuff I take but thats about it. When I was cutting up abandoned cars on this one cliffside back in high school Id have the generator going along with the occasional sledge hammer so people would sometimes get scared and call the cops. They'd come have me hand over my Id so they can check for warrants and tell me to go back to work. I think they realize that we've got a littering problem around here and that im just trying to minimize it. If I could find a place that will take tires and crt's for free I'd be able to clean up alot more around here. But for now im just doing what I can. Id also like to get a tire press also to at least get the rims out of some of the tires i find.

Just cutting the cord and not disposing of the rest turns you into the enemy of the scrap world. You cut the cord or bust the back off n leave the mess n irritate your community and teach bad habits to up n coming scrappers. However you are a AL guy then there is heat sinks that add up pretty quickly I have two five gal buckets took me bout a hour to fill just off old TV sets and monitors. The copper is self explanatory also there are IC chips that you can collect n sell or process your self if you can get set up correctly and safely have fun it's boring work lol. The tubes are where it's at but that is something if you're not into u shouldn't go... They are fading fast. Js Sincerely Si
