Scrap for me has mostly been about ewaste. My main problem tends to be one of focus right now. I decided to go back to school in the fall looking for a career in healthcare.

I have lots of dreams. LOL. My current drive/motivation/dream is leather and trying to get some more drum throne covers made and SEEN by the right people.

Yet I always keep my eyes open for opportunities. Sometimes they go my way

Copper, brass, and Leather. 3 of my favorite things.

That is cool. I have a son that is a graphic designer for the San Francisco 49's and loves leather work. He worked for the Baltimore Oriels and Ravens before he took this job. Based on his experience, I would present a design to the NFR, (National Finals Rodeo) for their trophy saddles.
Give back more to this world than we take.

The winning bid on this parcel was $18,000 + 10% buyers premium + back county taxes of $1500. All I can say is wow. Someone must really want that old rusty pickup truck that is hidden back there in the weeds.

I spoke with the code officer yesterday. He said that they want to see the property cleaned up in 6 months. The first month will be mostly wasted time as you have to get an attorney to send a letter to the previous owner giving them a certain amount of time to clear off their personal property.

All in, it was a good experience. There were obviously bidders there that aren't familiar with the value of property here as many went much too high. There is an old brick warehouse that I think is about 5,000 square feet that sold today. The roof is bad. They have had it at auction every year for the last several. Last year someone bought it at this auction for $100 but then backed out and didn't pay the taxes ($6,000 per year). This year that same building sold for $11,000. I expect to see it back on the auction block again next year. Crazy auction fever.

Could have been a developer who bought the property with the intention on subdividing the land and building a small neighborhood.

Did you have any estimate as to the wieght of the ferrous scrap? With dealer pricing, light iron is probably about $175 a gross ton.

No idea. All I have are the pictures. There is a crap load of wood and pallets on the property too. A lot of work for sure, although all the wood can be burned on site.

    Hipo-
Don't give up on those dreams either!
I'll tell you something about me. I have a B.S. in Marketing. I spent 10 years in Corporate Marketing and left the field for various reasons.
I had bought an 85 year old home and was renovating it. When another job went by the wayside.. people told me "You need to start your own General Contracting Company" I thought "No one will want to pay me to do that" But they did- I was good at it, I took care of my clients, I returned calls, I priced my work fairly and it was done in the most retentive way possible.

After 5 years or so- I couldn't expand my business- because the lack of people who will even show up, let alone do the work to my standards- were non-existent.

I decided that I wanted to move to the commercial side of the construction industry. I thought "If I can go from being a Marketer to a Profitable and sustaining general contractor- I can easily make this leap to the commercial side!" Well it wasn't easy- nearly 1 year of hunting, networking, searching, interviewing, being told NO, being pretty much laughed at, ignored, told to go back to school, even told by one company "We don't think he can overcome the skills gap to be an entry level estimator" Taking a job and literally was lied too about the position and the job itself, quitting that job, losing friends who "helped me along the way" and thought I was INSANE for not staying there and working for them because "I can use the experience to move along in a year"

Well I will tell you this: I finally got it. I interviewed for a company for the job I REALLY want, with the proper salary, with benefits, with having "mentors," a company who is willing to invest in me and utilize the transferable skills I possess and hone them! I start that job on Tuesday.

Point being- most people would have given up after the 2nd "No" or the 10th, or the 30th! Some would have done so when they were insulted, or laughed at, or told to go back to school. I wiped the naysayers aside. I know my worth, and my value, and it was just finding the right people who saw me as me and what I could provide!

Find your passion- pursue it, and don't give up on those dreams!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

Thank you for this Sledge. I am no spring chicken and have no interest in health care. It is merely the pursuit of a decent steady income. I had a great career (like you) that I tired of. Ever since leaving that, there have been many areas I have pursued but doing anything consistently until the money starts coming is really hard. I have heard this message of persistence before and I do know it works, I just have to be willing to work it and there is no time like the present

3 things to know about these types of property
    1) check to see if there are any liens against the property.
    2) the vehicles, yhe dmv or local sherriffs ofice can provide you with last owners info to check if they were reported stolen.
    3) be sure to check with DEQ, to see if the property was cited for contamination, if it was it will be your responsibility to strip the contaminated soil(36" in louisiana) and replace with new soil. This may be the reason they would let it go so cheap

If you go back and read Hipo's post, it went for considerably more than the going rate.
