Please identify class of cable and it's approximate value at scrap yard

Hi,

I have a chance to bid on a roll of cable at an auction. I think I can get it for around $25.00 I think it's worth a lot more to the scrap yard. It's approximately 150lbs. I live in BC, CANADA. I need to know if this is a good deal.

I can't seem to upload a picture. Anyways it has a male plug with 35 pins in it. So im assuming it has 35 seperate wires in it. Approximately 80-100ft and is roughly 150lbs. Value in scrap cable???

I have never seen cable like this before. It should have numbers on the cable or reel that can be googled.

How did you post your pics. I know there are several ways this can be done, just wondering which one you used.

I used imageshack. Hopefully i will get the specs of the cable before the auction ends. It looks like a telephone line?? i dont think its fiberoptic. So far this looks like Jelly scrap?? thats about $0.60 a pound. I just want to flip it to the scrap yard

At 150#, with a purchase price of $25 (Canadian?), you should see profit at anything over 17 cents per pound at the yard.

I recognize that cable from something to do with telecom but I can't recall what, exactly. It's data cable, though, 35-pin circular MIL spec. Maybe I saw it used for a spreader/setup for a town garage but that seems an odd use for military-grade cable. It may have a much higher value as a non-scrap item.

You are asking about PAYING for a cable you have NO IDEA what you will be getting.
Using your optimistic numbers, $0.60 X 150 #'s is $90.00. Minus $25 is $65.00... At worst you are spending $25 on education to optimistically clear $65.00. If you are that worried about taking $25 out of your pocket, why are you taking $26 out of your pocket? If you are so close you cannot gamble $25, spend the money on Ramon noodles!

Who would be a buyer of that cable? I did buy it for $20.. .so 14 American.. Its still in my car and I will get it out tomorrow. I will get more information from the writing on the cable. It does have nice brass plugs.

I have a shorter length of that cable too. Brand new/unused condition. Same plugs, I wondered what it was for.

I decided its got more value as 'better than scrap', figured maybe its useful in a boats control panel cabling or a extension for a MIG welders control - main power supply, industrial equipment or construction machinery.


So its sat there for 4 years so far.... Unadvertised.

I have been tossing pretty much all data cable into the computer wire bin. Around here, that pays out at about $.30/#.

There are buyers on the forum who will do quite a bit better but for you, I don't know if the shipping will work out in your favor. If you are shipping other e-waste, you might add that to top-off.

That is data cable, I get gaylord's weekly from one of our E-Scrap company's. We buy it as flat wire (#3 wire) about $.32 a lb. bail it by it self and export it as high recovery wire and do very well.

You keep buying stuff without knowing what you are doing and this eventually happens!

Chwkcleanup - Don't expect any yard to give you high recovery for this. Even if they know what it is, best you could expect is #2 Insualted.

Going to the scrap yard tomorrow. I'll let you know what I get for it

Yeah that's what I expect. What do they pay for that near you?

Depends on the yard. One place #2 is about 60 or 65, other places are based on percent recovery. I would guess they would says 30 percent, in which case you would get 30 to 40 cents.
