I recently sold some silver contacts as is for silver recovery and the buyer says they are tungsten. They don't have a waffle back and they showed red in the silver test. The reason he wants to return them is that he can't melt them for easy recovery. Is there an easy way to tell the alloy content without having access to test equipment? Can these be processed to remove the silver?

You should as miked suggested join the gold refining forum, also sell your silver contacts to forum members who know how to safely deal with them with out killing themselves or harming other people nearby.
Cadmium would be a slow cancerous death.

Is the gold refining forum a part of this group? I would like to get started in refining metals myself. I buy old lab equipment and computers and have just been saving the circuit boards and other weird stuff. I think I have all the equipment needed to refine metal sitting in the warehouse. Have been using the Paul O Abbe ball mill to make sea glass instead of crushing the ic chips. So far the only refining I do is melt irony aluminum into ingots (watch out for magnesium air drills). I have been scrapping forklifts, electric motors, motor starters, welders, and transformers for several years now and just started removing the contacts from the backing again. I do this under a vented lab fume hood.

Refining is extremely dangerous if done improperly . Admin does not want info about it on this site. That's why you were referred to the gold refining forum. They are very safety conscious, and will try to scare away people that may pose a safety hazard.
Etack or noblemetalworks may be able to refer you to a buyer

There is some confusion with the information you posted, Hokes Refining Precious Metals Wastes was purchased and scanned by be with out any gold forum donations, her companion book Testing Precious Metals was purchased by me and a few other forum members who made contributions towards the purchase.
After scanning the testing precious metals book with OCR software I then forwarded the book to the donor who had made the largest donation towards its purchase. The testing precious metals book contains formulas for testing solutions.
