Most businesses I've worked in have a cubicle, empty office or area in a warehouse where they keep their junk. It could be office furniture or old computers. I'm interested in old computers or other electronics.
One problem is getting in the business and finding the right person who has the authority to say whether or not you can have their scrap.
Almost all businesses where I live have No Soliciting signs on their doors so that might be your main obstacle.
Gutter install businesses. I have had several loads of aluminum gutters recently $$. Offices with metal desks and legal file cabinets moving or remodeling/going out of business. Auto repair shops. Seriously you name it... Mattress companies. I picked up 3 or 4 loads of bed frames a local mattress company overflow warehouse was told to not donate or sell but to destroy. Grocery stores doing re-modeling. Lawyers offices. Chemical labs. Mechanical businesses. Lighting supply companies. Mortgage companies. Condo complex offices. Apartment offices. Independent mechanics. I've never picked up from a plumber, probably because they come across copper and they all know it's value and will take it themselves to recycle.
Of course I have acquired all these contacts and business cards etc.. from doing arranged Craigslist pickups via email, text and telephone calls - basic networking. The mattress company from my neighbor, but if Craigslist isn't your thing then maybe driving around and asking could work for you. I am a part-timer and am new at this, but that is my experience.
SKW I don't know what you did with those bed frames, but you should sell them. That's a nice little gig to get a bunch of those.
