I have quite a bit of RG59 cable. The cable has 1 20ga and 2 18ga Bare Copper. Is this worth trying to scrap? Any estimate how much I could get? Should I attempt to strip it?
Thanks

it would help a lot if ewe knew what RG59 cable is ? some of us are just dumb rednecks who just know what we see.
is the copper stranded or solid. what kind of insulation, is it embedded in any thing else like pvc or ? 20 guage and 18 guage are both a pain in the A-- to strip with out the right tools. unless they are solid and not stranded.
It is kind of like coax with power attached... The 20 gauage is solid, the 2 18 are stranded (used for power cables) The 20 gauage has a white coating around the solid copper, then copper mesh, then rubber? on the outside..
Basically, coax and power all in 1 cable..
im an SIS (survival/suplemental) scrapper so I would strip the rubber. take off the mesh sell it as #2 bare, see how hard it is to strip the solid 20 guage and if doable strip it and sell as #2 bare, then sell the 18 ga as #2 insulated but thats just me.
Yard by me would not take it said it was coax. I showed them the copper mesh and they still said no. So I took it home cut it and turned in the mesh for copper #2 as stated.
Never scrapped before so you kind of lost me old dude Basically have about 500 foot of this stuff.. any idea how much money we are talking? Basically just looking at an estimate.. 20$, $50, $100?
Call your scrap yard first and tell them you have some coax cable and ask how much for it? For me, it's not worth it.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.
If you have 500 feet of it, I would toss it on Craigslist.
New, it looks like it sells anywhere from $45 to $75.
Going by my chart, it takes 203.4 feet of 18ga to make a pound and 323.4 feet of 20ga to make a pound. IF they'll buy it, you'll get about $1.10 a pound. So, looks like around $2.
wow mick where do I find that chart.?
I just wondered if those power wires attached to the actual coax was maybe copper coated steel??? Might want to strip a piece and stick a magnet to it.
Welcome yerself, dont post some random code for a cable that the average everyday redneck like me an olddude dont know, and fer godssake put up a picture instead of playin 20 questions.
Here is a post from a while back that I don't think many paid attention too...

Wow Mick that's an awesome link. Very helpful as I'm considering buying used insulated wire from a source here to strip. I'll bet there's not as much worth buying as I had hoped though. If any.
Eat. Sleep. Scrap.
I'm considering the same thing. And it's been a real help in deciding to strip different stuff or just take it as "Insulated".
Test strip a small section and put a magnet to determine if it is steel with copper plating. Some coax I enjoy stripping but some is just steel and I don't bother. Many people are happy to give me used coax. "Direct TV" coax to be good to strip and the cable company's coax is junk. If you know ham radio operators or cb guys ask them for their used/bad coax.
If it is in good condition I vote for craig's list as well. No additional work and a better payday. Experience will teach the most. Best of luck and let us know how it works out, Mike.
