iron vs steel, is there a difference?

I have searched "iron, steel" "iron vs steel" and cant find what im looking for. Any time i tell the yard i have steel, the receipt says iron (i know that steel is mainly iron)

Is the yard cutting me a deal or ripping me off?

I have some steel and some cast iron. Should I just throw it all into my steel pile?

Do any of you get a steel rate and an iron rate, or is it all just ferrous iron?

My yard pays .10lb for anything ferrous, light iron or steel. If it sticks to a magnet, it all goes in the same pile.

The terms "steel" and "iron" are pretty interchangeable. Beyond that, you want to figure out what your particular yard(s) wants. Here, we have #1 and #2 Iron, each classified as Prepared or Unprepared. Then you have Light Iron and Torch Material. Plus Cast Iron. Usually, I throw Cast and #1 Iron together as they usually go for the same price and the yard throws them together. BUT - I'm taking the chance and someday they won't.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

If it's breakable, it's Cast. I've never heard the term "Cast Steel".

my yard has me dump the steel and iron seperate, the cast all goes in one pile, the steel in another. they also pay me for "light iron" (or tin, at .10#) when its thin sheet steel. anything thick enough gets weighed seperate and payed a little better (.13 or .14) depending on the grade. i am lucky to have a yard that takes almost anything as long as its clean, and seperated/weighed correctly. i <3 NJ
