Just got a free organ from CL...

OK anyone ever scrap an organ? I opened the back and there is a ton of wires and capacitors. Looks like a unch of brass in there too in the tone generator box. From what I could muster so far the pedal caps sell OK on ebay. Maybe some parts too. IF anyone has scrapped one of these before and know anything special about them any advice would e greatly appriciated.

I have never done one but I know some use vacuum tubes. If it has tubes then ebay/cl will have buyers for those. Ebay has a few listed right now by searching “organ vacuum tube”.

If you donate it to a church you could become an "organ donor". Sorry, had to say it.

This one I got doesnt work. So I dont think I could sell it outright. Its a 1950's organ so yes it has tubes. SO thanks for that Scrap Master J. I will be tearing it apart after work tonight Ill see how much of what I get out of it. Only cost me $5 bucks in fuel to pick it up so has to be more then that just in copper wire in the thing.

Pay attention to the contact points for the keys, pedals, etc. Some Hammond organs use a fine PGM wire for each key. I'm in the middle of tearing apart a late 1960's Lowrey organ and it's key contacts arrangement is a series of long spring coil wires that appear to be silver or silver plated - I haven't pinned it down yet. If you search on the site goldrefiningforum.com you'll find more details about the use of PGM's in Hammond organs.

Wow. Did a little more research on these. If there are tubes in it, leave them in the amp and sell the amp on ebay. This user has a lot of examples of stuff he has sold. We are talking $60 each for that part. And the speaker is valuable also. Who knew? Interesting.

My Dad had an organ back in the 60's, and it had a "Leslie" speaker in it. I read somewhere that the Leslie speaker by it self is valuable. Best of luck and let us know how it goes, Mike.

Well is has been scrapped. I wont tear down he next one as far as I did this one. Ended up with 4 lbs 25% copper wire, 2 lbs thin copper sheet and wire from motors, 2 lbs motors i didnt unwind copper from, 1.5 lbs brass and about 125 lbs of shred steel. Plus the parts im going o try and sell on ebay. So scrap metal I got about $25 dollars plus what ever I get on ebay. Not bad for a CL freebie but I spent 4 Hours tearing it down today just to see what was inside every little thing. Next time ill just pull the parts cut the wires and sell the rest as shred. Took out about a billion screws to get to the sheet copper and brass. But was a good learning experience.

You DO save yours screws (and nuts and bolts, etc) don't you ? Don't mean to insult you but we've learned to remind folks from time to time because some people just absentmindedly throw them away.
