I'm new wondering about Cast Iron

I'm new to the whole Scrapping thing and would like to dive inand get started. Is there any money in Cast iron? there is a ad on craigslist where i am from for a 850lb cast iron counterweight for 90$ Is that a good deal? Thats for the help i've read alot of your guy's posts and i lvoe it here already.

850@ .1575/lb, your lookin at roughly $133 - $90=$43


I guess it all depends if $43 - gas money is worth it to you to pick up and load/unload

I used to scrap alot of cast but it isn't as common as it used to be. Back in the late 80s, cast paid a premium over straight steel. Keep in mind when selling cast such as engine blocks that they want it clean to pay top price, no head on them or cranks in them. Brake rotors are cast iron too. Nice thing about cast is that it's usually found in large heavy chunks.

PS: Yea, manhole covers are cast iron but they belong to the city and it's really bogus to take them.

last week i sold 2500 lbs of cast iron. it went in as mixed yard cast at .145/#. it was worth it for me to pay a buddy of mine to help me load it all.
The problem is that a load like that is rare for me. its hard to get my hands on that much iron on a consistent basis. if its worth your labor and gas, go for it. otherwise try to offer less and negotiate. they might be willing to budge on the price
