Yes but like here in Houston, it's illegal to take from the recycle bin, but not the trash...

If they want to be nasty they can charge a dumpster diver digging the trash with Data Mining for credit card numbers.

The town probably sells any metal they get in those bins to the scrapyard. The goverment hates when you eat into their profits and they lose money when somebody takes the AL that they are going to scrap out!

Problem with taking out of the recycling bins is the recycling company, whether its the township or private supplies buckets and bins for pickup. The items in them is considered property of the recyclers so taking out of the recycling containers is steeling. The recycler is providing a service and their payment is usually the items they pick up. My township pays some to them for their service but most of their money comes from selling the items they are picking up.

Thats like what happened not far from me. These idiots broke into a scrap yard, hijacked a bobcat and used it to plow through the wall of the main building. they then used it to smash the money kiosk. and steal all the copper from the building. i dont know if they got caught but they really did some damage.

There is nothing "so called" about it. If they're stealing, then they are in fact thieves. Here's another case of some thugs justifying their criminal behavior.

So I've been scrapping part time for the past couple of months and after reading this thread I decided to find out once and for all if Dumpster diving / trash day runs were legal where I live(San Diego, CA).

    I found this. http://www.sandiego.gov/environmenta...scavenge.shtml

Dang it. I guess I'll have to stick to the shadows when I go out.

We pick up from people bins every week with no problem what so ever. I would think it depends on each independent city or town.
Some of the people that see us now leave out things just for us. Everything from drink cans to auto parts have been left out for us. When asked by the person that owns the bin what we are doing we tell them this is how we pay our rent and they give us a thumbs up.
