Pewter Q and A

Anyone have any knowledge at all on pewter?

Does your yard buy it? I see a few successful sales of pewter ingots on e-bay.

I snagged a couple of pewter mugs from the garbage this morning. they are beat up and in bad shape. the bottoms are both stamped E-2 (is this a grade of peweter?), exclusively for Steiff company, made in Spain.

I called my yard and they don't buy it. I found a site online that says somewhere between 20 and 25 cents per ounce. So maybe $4 per pound? Assuming I can find a place to buy it.



I guess for now I will start another bucket just for pewter.

Any info is great as I know nothing and there is nothing on this forum that I could find regarding it.

yeah saw that. thanks. Being that pewter is mostly tin, can it have any kind of real value? From what I have read there are so many variations that it either needs some kind of purity stamp or grade, or would have to have every piece shot with a gun to determine it's mix.

Here's what is really funny. I called my yard asking if they buy pewter. She says yes, just a second and I will grab the price sheet. pause..... OK, here we go. power supplies are 25 cents, hard drives are 40 cents.....I had to interrupt her and spell out the word pewter. heh.

Hey guys, if the pewter is verified tin content it is quite useful to bullet casters.you could check over at the http://castboolits.gunloads.com/ forum these guys are always looking for lead, tin and pewter for there craft. bigjoshl

my yard takes it as cast alu.

OK, so the consensus is to hold it and not toss it in with the steel scrap. I will try and figure out more. Thanks for the info with the gun guys and such, Let's keep this thread going as I see there is a lot to learn here.

I would Google the company name and try to find out about them ,, might try google "pewter E-2 " and see what comes up ;;; ??? is it 10 years old or is it 100 years old or older?????????

So has anybody found a buyer for pewter yet? If so what are they paying?

pewter was once known as a cheap imitation metal. I haven't googled anything on it, but got this info from my grandfather, who was standing beside my motorcycle one time with a hammer in his hand. When I laughed, and asked what he was doing with the hammer he said he'd been pecking around on the bike to see how much of it was real metal, and how much was just pewter ; )

There are a lot of things people call pewter which are not. Pewter will almost always be marked pewter. Anything marked Wilton, RWP, or pewterex is not pewter. Pewter is soft, if it does not bend easily it is not pewter.

Pewter is roughly 95% tin. Tin is at $9+ per pound. Pewter buyers should be offering around $7 per pound. If you cant get that i would look for another buyer. I would not sell below $7 per pound delivered or your getting taken advantage of.

I'm pretty sure he is talking about "tin" (as in the element) not sheet metal or shread steel. google it

Pewter prices can vary depending on what the base metal is (lead or tin) and how much of that base metal it contains. Real pewter contains tin (generally 85%-95%) and my yard buys it at $3-$5 a lb.
