Get a Geiger counter and find out if they light up when you get close to it with it. On the other hand most scrap yards won't accept medical equipment at all. Why I don't know I guess the fear of radioactivity just scares them to much to even mess with it.
I work for a medical device company (my real career), and there are a lot of concerns with equipment that has not been decontaminated properly. Many pieces come in contact with HIV, West Nile, Small Pox, etc, etc...I would consider taking medical equipment because of my background, but if you are unsure, I would really inquire about the use of and the possibility of what has come in contact with the piece of equipment.
Now, for the lead panels, I think a Geiger counter is the way to go, but again, find out if anybody takes them first...It would suck to be stuck with them
