How to grade chromed copper pipe?

    How to grade chromed copper pipe?

    Did a CL pickup last friday of mostly old steel ductwork. There was also 2 pieces of copper piping. They were both identical, normal copper pipe going to a small brass fixture and then a shiny silver pipe on the other end. I didn't give it much thought other than putting a magnet to the silver pipe, when it didn't stick I assumed stainless steel. Was cleaning up my little work area today and picked these pipes up to remove them from the brass, thats when I noticed how "soft" they were, obviously not stainless. Cut them with my bolt cutters and could see the copper colour where I made the cut. One of them still had the barcode tag sticker thing on it, was pretty beat up but the word chrome was still there.



    Long story short.... how are these graded?

    I would think that is brass under there.

    hmm, the pipe is very malleable just like all other small copper pipe. But I guess brass makes sense in a number of respects as I give it more thought.

    I was able to bend and break the pipe just using my hands....

    i have seen chromed copper from a sink before. i sold it as #2 pipe because it was plated. there was no question at the yard. im not sure why it was plated at all, but i guess the mfg had a good reason for it besides its shiney appearance.

    Isn't that what was used under sinks where you could see it when you open the cabinet doors. Shinny looks better than bare copper. Mike.

    oh wow!!! read the thread title and realized i scrapped for tin a 7gal bucket of chrome copper pipe today

    the insides were all rusted green but i figured it was just scum buildup since copper doesnt come in chrome
    collecting san joses scrap

    Yep. Looks to be chrome plated copper pipe. Used in plumbing situations where cosmetics count. You'll see it on certain drinking fountains, faucets, and coffee machines ( think Starbucks or office buildings ) to name just a few. Yard takes it as #2 here.

    I agree, No 2 , in with the painted stuff, and all those soldered joints you have been cutting off when you "make" your No1 pipe....right??

    When I help my dad prep his copper he has saved every year or 2 it goes in with the soldered cutoffs.
