    Name that rod

Found this metal rod under an old deck on a tearout job.
    Diameter 5/8"
    Length 9"
Weight 1.4 lbs (this thing has some heft to it)

It broke in two when I dropped on a concrete slab. The interior structure is crystalline and it is harder heavier and more brittle than steel.
I'll post photos in a few minutes.

    Thanks

I don't think I have permission to post pics yet sorry. Tried to create an album without any luck either.

Is it magnetic? May be cast iron, just thinking out loud here.

Here's a bit more. It is not iron since it fails the magnet test. Horribly. It is roughly the color of steel but I have the worst eye for color.

Just set up your account on Photobucket (or one of the others) and use the direct link to copy the pic,(as you place your mouse over the pic. a menu will drop down) then as your posting here just use the lil picture icon and paste there. Simple as pie,,,

Don't think it's iron. The magnets completely ignore it.

If it is not magnetic, but is colored similar to steel it could be zinc or magnesium, aluminum is usually whiter in color than steel. If you have a grinder see if it sparks that could narrow down the options.

No sparks on the grinder, which barely touches it btw. Also heating with a propane torch does not produce any glow. I'm starting to wonder if it could be carbide?

It is heavier than I expected it to be, but it seems way too hard to be lead.
It makes a nice ring when dropped or struck with a hammer.

Any way to tell? I hadn't thought of tungsten. If so, what would it be used for?

dont know how to test for it but my wedding ring is tungsten and weighs about the same as a lug nut and is no where near the mass of a lug nut.

Fist off I would like to name that rod Rodney Dangersteild .

I wondered about the tungsten coments and was thinking of all my dart throwing days.

I looked up black tungsten carbide rod. This is one of the pictures that came as a result.
