What kind of cable is this?

    What kind of cable is this?

    I picked up around 25 yards of cable on the side of the road and I started to strip it when I realized I didn't know what I had grabbed.



    The cable has a black plastic outer layer.
    a layer of silverish tape.
    a mesh of what I think is aluminum
    surrounding a layer of white plastic and
    in the middle a fairly stiff red copper looking wire that is magnetic.

    The cable width is around 1 cm.

    I'm new to this stuff so any insight would be appreciated. What kind of cable is it. What is it worth by metal etc.

    Yes its coax and the one you have is not worth stripping. Always check the center conductor to see if it is steel covered in a copper coating. If a magnet sticks to it don't waste your time stripping it. Most ham radio and cb radio coax is good. Also DirectTV coax has a cooper center conductor. Mike.

    Is it worth stripping the aluminum or foil?

    I believe that mesh around it is coated copper if it's not steel. If it don't stick scratch it with a knife to see. I don't trust cutting wire to see the copper if it's thin. I don't mess with em at all anymore though. Just throw em in with bailing.

    That is definetly Coax cable. Almost guranteed it was left behind by the cable company after they replaced it.

    My yard will let you throw it in the shred pile thats it. It certainly is not worth stripping!
