    Just a couple of questions

Hello I just had a couple of quick questions if anyone wants to help me out with them:
-What are the discs inside of the hard drives made of?
-i know that monitor and printer cable ends are considered gold connectors but are the ends of USB cables? older keyboards? Any other ends?
-i heard that there is a connector on a wireless card that is gold, is this true? Would that go with the gold connectors?

    Thanks in advance!

Julie, I have one of those also...can't remember where it came from. Someone will be along soon to answer your questions, but I just wanted to tell you how much I admire you for your determination and fortitude when you found that you could make more money for your "kids". You didn't hesitate. You just jumped right in and started breaking stuff down and learning as you went. I don't know whether the team or the school will ever know the scope of what you've done....but you will....and your forum family will. I hope you intend to stay with us !

Hi Julie. USB ends are gold plated as far as I know, as well as the plugs they plug into. The hard drive platters are primarily made of aluminum. I have read they may have a palladium (another precious metal) coating on them, but it is not enough to bother with. Not sure about the board, looks old though, maybe an old memory expansion board.

While I don't know the answers to any of your questions, you might want to check Wikipedia to see if the information is there. That's usualy the first place I turn to when I need to research something. Sometimes there will even be links for further information that can be helpful. My only problem with Wiki is that sometimes I get sidetracked and start going off on tangents.

He is correct in his answer but we're saving ours up till we get a small tote full then their going to a buyer. Here's one buyers price; Hard Drive Platters $.35 per LB
this might help if you recognize any of these gold plated ends.

Is that price right? The aluminum alone is worth more then that, $0.55 around here right now.

I looked up a couple of those chips that can be seen on the board, and they are part of a power circuit. Based on that, and the size of those fingers and traces, I suspect it may be a power regulator of some sort. Did it by chance come out of a laptop?

no google hits on that. I'm with the guy that said an add on memory to something maybe. Might try removing that heatsink on top, and see if anything under it. then toss it in with the finger cards, or the memory I'm more thinking some type memory actually, with those chips on it

It might be a VRM. (Voltage Regulator) That crossed my mind, but I've never seen one with chips like that. The ones I have seen all had little transformers on them, kinda like an old transistor radio board

Sorry if I'm being a complete noob - if USB connector ends are gold plated, how come they're not yellow?
