I have a few TVs under my belt now, and have come across some interesting different colors. Of course there is the bright copper which is the most common it seems. But, I have come across some wire that is red, and last night I uncovered a purple one. Are these wires coated with something? and can I still get them as Bright copper?

Are you sure they are all copper? Cut them and check the inside of the wire, is it copper or aluminum wire? Usually the off colored ones are aluminum.

The colored ones are likely aluminum. Cut a wire. If it's silvery-colored - it's aluminum. I've been disappointed so many times, I've got a tub full. Even check the copper-colored ones: If they feel light - guess what?

I have found that the nonblack ones are almost always aliminum

aluminum...that sucks. i guess i will cut them and make sure they are not copper.

I've gotten quite a few purple, or other colored ones that are copper. It seems there is no trend.

yeah if its heavy you know its gonna be copper if you look at a big old piece and its lighter then then small copper one you just did you got a problem.

I still strip them no matter what. Yard pays $.81 a pound for clean alum wire. Well I should say I have my daughter strip them. She is good at it but Ive only seen copper color and red so far.

as others have mentioned, those wires that are NOT copper coloured are most likely NOT copper but aluminium wire.
u can feel the difference in weight if u hold a copper degauss cable and then hold one of the odd coloured ones.
the lighter ones will be alum
just to make sure, take a hacksaw blade or some other serrated blade and cut across those wires- if u see the silvery shine inside, then its alum
copper will be the same copper colour inside as well.
The colors are at least somewhat based on type/percentage. The copper color are generally pretty close to pure copper, the reds are a high 90's I think. The green and magenta-ish are almost always aluminum. I tried to find a source...but...can't right now.
