Since this thread started, I've been trying to find the post in question but haven't found it in order to PM an answer. But you just gave me a clue as to what MIGHT have happened, myekem. One common scenario is where someone starts a thread by asking a question say in the Breaking Down... section. Then someone suggests making an introduction followed by more responses. I come on in the morning and see a thread by some with a low post count and check. There's no introduction thread. I delete the thread and send the new member a PM asking please make an introduction in the Off-topic section - There went your post. Another scenario is where a new member posts on an old thread (often starting a whole new subject). Then there is a post telling the person they should make an introduction. I'll come along and delete the new person's post and the replies. This is for continuity of the thread. Imagine if I left your post telling someone from a year ago to make an introduction.

Does either of these seem like what happened?
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

No, you're right Kris Kringle. And I probably took the wrong approach by leaving it and then responding to it. I do hope this has helped, though.

I certainly wouldn't have minded if about 2/3's the posts were deleted since last checking in about 14 hours ago. Mick and PH must be pulling their hair out about now.

And that's not counting the eight threads and five posts that WERE deleted in the same time period.

Rebar17, this has been brought up by you and others before. I hear you. I like to know whom I am dealing with and a little of their back ground and location. Believe it or not it helps in determing what advice to give or how to give it.

The part where I strongly reccomend that new members read the old threads is two fold: first their questions will most likely be answered in an old thread and have additional information, secondly they will get to know the members by reading the old threads and most definately add to their knowlege about other aspects of scraping.

I have read most or all of the threads you have contributed here they tend not to lean toward techiques of scraping so why are you here? Mike.

Well, Mike, I come here for information and for discussion. Is that a problem? Part of what I was getting at in my post that was deleted is that things are somewhat limited when they can only be as the "elite" see them, it's stifling at best. I like the forum and would rather see it grow than to be a clubhouse for a few and I have no problem saying that because that's what I think. You may agree or not with me as much as I might not agree with you. I am not a BS artist, so I'm not going to be discussing scraping techniques that I am here learning. I actually am doing what you advise and reading, digesting and searching for the answers I'm looking for. I do have a bit of experience with web forums though and I do know that you can't control the behavior of newbs no matter how many you yell at. Even with an intro thread, they are still gonna ask the same old questions that the veteran members are sick of hearing, it's inescapable.
If the intro thing is such a big deal, why hasn't the site forced newbs into a user group that has to make their first post in the intro section? It's a simple matter for whoever geeks the site. That would solve the intro thing but would not make anyone search before asking, just won't happen.
I think it's better to just not answer an unsearched question than to have a bunch of members jump an the poster about doing a search, you wouldn't act like that in person, why be like that here? Where's the benefit and what does it solve?

I suppose my thoughts might have been a little off subject, as they really weren't pertaining to deleted posts, just something that had been on my mind for awhile, and I thought it might be a good time to insert it. Hope i didn't throw your thread too far off

No problem Bear. Thanks for the input and you were still on track with what I had in mind.

I am sorry Mick, It could have possibly been that you deleted their thread and it deleted my post.. That never came to mind. And I am glad that you didn't delete my post because it seems to have some input from everyone. And I forgot about rule 10, I don't read the rules before every post and I have a short memory. My question is answered now thanks.

Myekem, some people on this forum are just plain mean. Whatever deep psychological drives motivate their behavior have little to do with particular breeches of forum ettiquette. They have a repeating pattern of nastiness which you will see if you stay on here long enough. They wait, like vultures, for an opportunity to rip someone apart and then they make that person out to be the one in the wrong.

Others on here merely tire of being asked the same questions repeatedly when they have already been covered at length in past threads. Even though some of the information may have changed since the thread - change is a constant in this field. And considering the world wide potential for new information - new aspects could be added daily potentially - it is considered offensive to ask about something when there are already threads dedicated to it. However, covering topics already covered happens on a daily basis -- because there are only so many topics in scrap metal - some people get called on it and some don't .

Others would like to see an introduction so they can learn something about the new person. Even though everything in that introduction could be complete fiction - for some reason it makes people feel more secure to read it and feel like they have been treated with the proper level of respect. Because heaven forbid - someone should just come on here and get "their" information for nothing. Really - the difference between earning the right to ask a question and not having that right is a couple of paragraphs that could be complete bs?

It seems to me that most of the people who access the forum are lurkers. Wonder why?
