Buying Air conditioning motors from Scrap Yards
Hi Fellow Scrappers,
I was buying old a/c motors from a scrap yard for .50 per pound, then taking them home and breaking them down, and sellling the copper. The scrap yard I was getting them from no longer sells them to the public. Does anyone
know a Scrap yard in Phoenix, AZ that sells these motors by the pound? I'm retired old lady on social security that needs some extra income. What other types of motors have a lot of copper? Thanks everyone for any advice.

If you can safely get rid of the picture tubes you might start picking up tv's and monitors, everyone seems to be getting rid of them. Check in the free area of Craigslist. There is usually 2 to 3 lbs. of copper in them. There is a couple of posts on here about how to safely ground them out.

TG, have you checked with local heating & cooling service companies? Also check with HVAC parts houses as they get old ones to dispose of.
One thing I do is buy motors from a fellow scrapper. Here the current price at the salvage yard is about $0.23/lb. Thats what I pay them.
Now some motors have Al(aluminum) wiring which is not worth breaking down. I just take the ones with Al wiring an put them in a pile and sell them to the yard for motor price so I don't loose any money.

Yeah try putting an add on CL that you will buy them from the public at 50 cents a pound I cant see a scrapper turning down better than scrap yard price.

We sell ours for double market price, compressors too. I have never investigated the value in breaking them down.

just a hint if you try it, whenever i break down anything i have in med-large quantities, i take the time to sort them into sil=milar construction, or even model number or manufacturer.
there is a learning curve, and the more you do of the same on in a row, the faster you become.
WOW!! Ya were buying at 50c a lb and still turning a profit?? Hmm going to check my numbers. As I turned down 35c lb to buy them from a local yard. I thought that was too high..lol.

on the automotive side alternators and starters have a good amount of copper, vaccum cleaner motors have alot, and industrial electric motors also
50 cents for unprocessed motors is too high, that would be a great price if the casing was off and the rotor was removed though, especially if most of your copper is number 2 which motors usually are
I would love to buy'um at .35 a#.The smaller motors could still be profitable.(1 horse and under) Yards i have contacted will not sell to public. A word to the wise...one could get burned with alm. windings!
