Question JUST PICKED UP AN OLD vintage 1950 's HOTPOINT REFRIGERATOR?Need some advice

I just picked up an old fridge from back in the day, looks like about 1950's or 60's. I am dismantling it right now. Any tips? As I am new to scrapping. Looks like its made of steel on the bottom. Anyone that has some ideas on what I should be taking to the scrap yard?

    Thanks

Pull the copper lines and aluminum evaporater. Don't bother pulling the compressor as it has aluminum windings.

Most of the old low speed ones were. The old style whirlpool rotaries are hit and miss ( about 50% of the ones are aluminum).

Don't feel too bad, Just last year I junked out a 50 year old clock for the gears and such....found out less than 2 weeks later it was worth over $1800.00 as it was to a clock restorer that lived less than a block from me! "Crying and Learning" seems to be my SOP!

Check with your yard, because mine requires me to pull the compressor. Which is fine because they pay .21 cents/lbs for them.

Man that stinks I remember having one of those in my parents basement when I was a kid. I think my grandmother had it from like 1950 until around 1985. It worked until they got rid of it, only because they finished thye basement and bought a new one. Had the old metal ice trays too, the ones with the handles that you pulled up on to get the ice out.

Dang, I passed on a working 50's era frig that was in very nice condition just recently at an estate auction. I think it went for $35 which I figured was more than it was worth as scrap.

Coulda-woulda-shoulda would make a good sig line for me.
If it wasn't for the $ in $crap, it would just be.....

Some of those 50's era fridges had a painted metal interior.

That metal could be either Copper or Brass.

    Scratch it, check its colour.
If its a two box fridge the top box liner could be Copper or Brass with the Copper tube lines silver soldered around the casing. (or it could be lead/tin solder, I have found both)

I got NZ$50 for that one single box.

    ^I posted this last night.
Weirdly, on the walk home I found a old fridge on the side of the road, they'd taken the motor out. The fridge had been in a house fire (hmmmmmm, new source of scrapmetal?)
It had a internal ice box & a quick scrape indicated ..... Its copper...!

I will get a sized photo of it & weigh it up too.
That pickup place yealded me a Copper icebox, 4 fridge motors, 3 CRT Tv's, a little Ali extrusion, Ali sheet & some Copper wire.

And a wheel barrow, which I used to get all of the stuff home (10 blocks on foot)

    I have the pic now.
The whole things copper except for the lead soldering & all up, inc tubing, weighed 5Kg, thats NZ$35 or US$27.50 all up.

The image is a bit darker than I'd like, sorry.

Last night I got another fridge motor & a TV Ariel, fun.
The weekends normally uncover about 4 - 5 fridge motors a few CRT Tv's & whatever else someones dumped.

Weird, I haven't seen a copper freezer bin for ages & I find one a couple of weeks ago and another last night.

The first one was more about 4.5Kg & last nights was 3.5Kg. Add The 1Kg from the motor & round it up & its worth NZ$37 (US$30)
It was from a common looking (but older) F&P fridge. I'll get that photo too.

I found this to be a interesting read.

I have done well with the older appliances.

That makes the appliances in question all the older when you come across them.

The lady at a bank I get coins from told me about her mother getting a new cook stove and the old stove she replaced. It was a old Monarch.

She had no idea why a guy was more then happy to haul it away for her.
