They take them in there self from what I belive from when people buy new appliance and they do the free haul aways. I tried to get my nehbiors old stove when the guys were takeing out the old one. They said I cant have it because they have a contract to take them from the home owner. My nehbior was like you want that? I said i would take it. The delivery guys still said no, They have to take it back. So my nehbior gave me two bikes at least. Said he had a old dryer I could have in his basement and said he wouldnt help me take it out because he's to old. I said no, I dont want to damage your walls or stairs. I will wait untill he asks me to help him!

I think they add a charge to take them, but you can't get that charge removed if they do not take it...

If the owner does not want to give the stove to lowes that is his decision........The delivery driver was wrong he/nor Lowes own that property unless the owner signed a contract giving up his rights to the old stove................Oh well you won't have any luck getting much from big chain stores

Mike, big box stores are my largest source of scrap. It can be done with a little footwork.

Sorry I might have been wrong.........You pay for scrap?? Do you provide dumpsters? Not trying to get into your biz just seems hard to get to talk to someone at one of these big stores who can actually make a decision without passing the buck.......Mabye I never followed the buck far enough
I do pay for the scrap. You'll run into a wall dealing with the individal stores. You have to deal on a regional basis.

Easiest step is to call the store. Tell them you need the district/regional office phone number to discuss some contract maintenance. Worst case scenario they take your info and never pass it along. Best case scenario they give you the number. Be up front, let them know it's not a complaint, and you might get somewhere fast./

Sounds like they were bullchittin' ya. A friend of mine gave me his washer and dryer after ordering new from Lowe's. Said if I didn't want them, he'd send them with Lowe's. I got there after Lowe's and he still had them.
Given how lazy some of Lowe's employees are, I would think the delivery guys would have been glad to have you take them off their hands.
With that said, Mongo, I don't know if I would try talking to Lowe's. Too many idiots and head honchos to deal with, but if you go forward report back how it went. I'd be curious.

I will go and try to talk to them and home depot tomrow (seen a bunch of steel in their dumpster today). and report back. still have yet to even start talking to small bussinesses, any advice on who to talk to and should i offer to buy up front or wait and see if i can get for free? as this information may help with lowes as well. thank you for all the responses and any furthure advice.
Lowes probably has a signed contract with someone paying about 75 to 80 percent of the price for number 2 shredd on AMM. Go out back and look at the name on the trailer or scrap container I can almost bet money its whoever owns the shredder in your area.

Hey freonjoe, just joined the forum and saw this post. I repair old washers and dryers and I'm looking for a good source of old machines. I see on this post you deal with major appliance stores like Lowes. How would I go about contacting them for their old customer appliances. I'm in the Rochester, NY area and prepared to buy them. I've heard used appliance stores buy from Sears, Lowes and Home Depot but I'm not sure how I would go about contacting them.
Appliancebuyer, most big box stores use a 3rd party to wharehouse and deliver the appliances. The cartage company is also responsible for disposing of the junk. Start with the department manager to see if they do their own deliveries. Tracking down the delivery companies can be a pain sometimes. I just signed another contract for disposal in another state and it took 6 months of legwork even though I am already an approved vendor and already have a contract with a different branch of the same cartage company,

I appreciate the information freonjoe! Would it be best to call first or just go to the store and speak directly to the department manager? Looking for any advantage or edge to speed up the process. I'm simply looking to pick a few decent machines a week out of their disposal stock. Willing to double or even triple the prices they get for disposal and hopefully we could work out a deal. Is that even possible?
Your best bet is to go to the store and speak with the manager. Usually they will want you to take them all. To them it is just junk and they would rather have one person to deal with. Make sure you can handle the volume before you start. Most of my contracts are for refrigerators only and each one kicks out 20 to 40 refrigerators a week.

That definitely sounds like a good plan. Unfortunately, I'm not quite to a point where I can deal with that kind of volume yet. Still building the business. How tough is it to find and connect with the 3rd party cartage companies who deal with the big box stores as you posted? I was thinking maybe I could offer them more than scrap value on 8-10 washer/dryer sets weekly until I'm ready to deal directly with the major appliance stores volume.
