Cast iron in the older ones, ductile iron in the newer ones, and brass parts.
Interesting that a quick google search for "fire hydrants brass" turns up a majority of links to news stories of the brass being stolen for scrap. Anybody who disables a fire hydrant by stealing the brass should have his n**s nailed to the floor, and the building set on fire...

Yea i came up with similar stuff. N**s to boards seems about right for that sh*t. Im thinking on restoring
some of the hydrants for garden or novelty pieces but not sure if there are many who would want one.
Not much on craigslist or ebay either. It seems they weigh around 160-250 but ill see what i can get for one
restored. Anyone want one??!! :-)
That's a pretty cool idea! I'd bet there is a market for the old ones all restored and pretty.
My dog would want one!
i would be interested in 3, my brother is a firefighter, my partner is one, and my fire extinguisher account, you can pm me a price, it would be closer to christmas tho
I started collecting hydrants a few years back, its kinda funny as everyone including me is on well water and I have this fire hydrant sitting in my front yard. Heve'nt had time to sandblast and paint my other two and I know of one more that I've been tying to get but never find anyone atound to make an offer to.
I had a guy give me a piece of a fire hydrant no stolen it has a nice chunk of brass on it and a heavy piece a steal a sawsall won't cut dad got his torch out to cut it
I found one today... I'm thinking that the above guesstimate of "160-250" pounds is off by at least a factor of 2. I'm no 'BurlyGuy', but I can still load a 27" Sony Trinitron in my truck by myself. This thing, it was all I could do to stand it upright. It was out beside a pile of old cut up garden hoses & some brush, so it was clearly someone's trashed novelty piece. You could see the tracks of where they dragged it out there. No-one home to ask about it. No way I was going to get it loaded by myself. Looked at it a minute... wiped the tear away & drove on about my business.

Send em down. BBQ is on me when we get it set up at my friend's house. She runs a doggie daycare place & REALLY wants a fire hydrant in the play yard.
Just FYI, they are auctioned off when replaced. Perfectly legal to own, scrap, whatever at that point.

The hydrant is not the heavy part, it's that big hunk of iron hanging on the bottom of it.
