Free scrap metal drop off ?

I rent at a commercial building. If it is ok with the landlord am I able to advertise that I will take metal for Free to be dropped off. I currently have a F350 Rack truck that people put stuff in. I don't want to piss off the town or junk yards but alot of people pay to take stuff to the dump. I know some people would be happy to have a location but is it a scrap business if you take it no charge or don't pay anything?

I would be worried about midnight tweekers stealing parts off your truck along with high grading stuff that was dumped off at night.

The yard I deal with has bins outside the gate for afterhours drop-offs. The tweekers literally circle the block all weekend waiting for anyone to drop stuff off. They will even show up out of nowhere to help you unload!

So far no one has taken anything out of the back of my truck. It's the last building on a road and the owner is a night worker, he is at the shop till usually 3am. I'm just afraid someone will try to bust me for running a scrap yard. But if there is no money flowing it is ok to do?

First ask your landlord, don't get him mad at you, them check with the city/county, if you keep things cleaned up and inside if you can, should be no problem.

There was a guy advertising on CL to drop stuff off at his location about a year ago. Had a full address and I can only guess thieves took to that like politicians to a wallet. Haven't seen the ad since.

Doesn't mean it can't work for you. Try it for a bit and see. Are there surveillance cameras around your location?
