What is the practical use for this? Pulling something up from a river? ...I have thought about getting one, but I feel a tommy lift gate would be more practical.

    Just curious.

Anything you want to lift up into the bed of the truck instead of using manpower. Large AC's, motors, anything large and bulky. Also big difference in price between a bed crane and lift gate.
Also here is something you might be able to use for dragging stuff out of the brush, especially if you don't have a good sturdy place to wrap a chain.

Have you ever used one of these? I use them for unloading odd sized pallets from semi trailers and other things but I don't personally think it would work good for pulling anything other than a pallet, and anything metal might just be dangerous!
