My Home MAde Wire Stripper

Here are some pictures of a wire stripper I made from some “scrap” materials and a utility knife blade as a cutter. I used only common hand and power tools to make the stripper. I don’t know what the brackets mounted on the flat iron base came from. The wheel is made from two truck suspension washers, piece of copper tubing, couple of bushings, threaded rod and nuts from a lamp and a steel rod to pivot on. Cutting bar is two pieces of flat iron with holes drilled to bolt together and hold blade tight. The spring under the blade bar helps push up bar when making adjustments for wire size and cut depth.
This stripper did not work so well at first, but after making some modifications- added hole in base to feed wire up from bottom, added guides on blade bar and shortened how far blade sticks out from bar. Stripper now works very well for something made essentially out of nothing but some stuff that was stashed in drawers and my time.
I have run several hundred feet of braided/stranded wire through this stripper, works great on longer lengths of wire, kind of putsy for stuff under a couple of feet. Wire shown in the picture is from a computer power cord. I did run the power cord through first to split the outer jacket. Have run wire some smaller than this just to see if it would work. It did, but stripped yield not worth the time.
Have not pulled any single strand wire though, might work as long as wire bends easily and is not kinked but probably won’t work on large gauge Romex. Tried a degaussing cable, did not work well, the V in the wheel not wide or deep enough to keep wire in place. Have more washers and will make another wheel for large guage braided/stranded wire
Took me a few hours to make and modify, probably a lot longer than that thinking about how to make one out of essentially nothing. Not a pretty looking commercially made stripper but works well jus the same. Maybe this will give some of you ideas to make your own.
