Cat paw dangers

Today, I watched a certified welder take a sanding pad to the face. He was wearing gloves and glasses and in my opinion was doing nothing wrong. The grinder (dewalt 4.5) kicked off what he was sanding and took a full fingers worth of skin out of his cheek. It did not cut into his mouth but darn close. For the rest of his life he is going to be asked what happened

I never thought such a small tool could do so much damage in such a short time. It's the holiday season, take an extra second and be careful.

any power tool can be dangerous, in any way, at any time, and not much good will come from any mishap, of course be careful. Even a tiny mistake. I've only seen once in all my years of using them, that it almost was on the lighter side. On a trim job of a large historic hotel(5 star restaurant, the only one in USA at the time) we were gettin it. Tools laying everywhere because we used company ones. I started to grab the belt sander but saw it had been unplugged to make room for something else. I traced the cord, found a plug, and heard an awful sound. That belt sander had been left in the locked on position, and was racing across the floor like a bat outa helllllooo? haha Them things will scoot! (luckily it ran out of cord and unplugged itself before doing any damage ; )

This explains why my dad don't want me getting one of these angle grinders.

My word of advice on this is to MAKE DARN SURE that the discs you are using are rated for the rpm of the grinder you're using.

Harbor Freight discs do not hold up to a quality angle grinder. They are rated for something like 4-6000 rpm, while the quality discs and grinders are around the 9-1000 IIRC.

I've had plenty break on me, but a quality disc has never shattered to the point of sending shrapnel at puncture velocities.

Camel grinding wheels (CGW), SAIT, and a few others are the only things the welding shop buys.

When/if he does, and in addition to what pirate suggests, also wear long sleeves, pants, heavy leather gloves, safety shield/glasses, and always have both hands and eyes on it before you pull the trigger

Just an update, he showed up on time this morning with 5 stitches, in good spirits, and worked a 12 hr day. . He asked for the flap disk to start his own wall of shame. He got the idea from all my fishing hooks( I keep a picture and the hooks Doctors removed) He showed the scars from a cut off disc he had removed from his leg last year

Wouldn't have about discs shattering with this.
