Items Most Scrap Yards Will NOT Accept Add to the List!

    Hey everyone,

We all know that not everything is fair game when it comes to scrapping. Some items get flat-out rejected by most scrap yards, and it’s good to know in advance so you don’t waste time hauling them in. Here’s a list of common items that most scrap yards WON’T take:

🚫 Propane Tanks – Unless completely emptied and de-valved, most yards won’t risk taking these due to safety concerns.

🚫 Refrigerators & AC Units – Unless the Freon has been professionally removed and tagged, these are usually a no-go.
🚫 CRT Monitors & TVs – Many scrap yards don’t want old tube-style screens because of the toxic materials inside.
🚫 Household Batteries – Some locations accept them, but most scrap yards avoid them due to disposal issues.
🚫 Sealed Containers & Pressurized Vessels – Anything that could explode when processed is a big risk.
🚫 Railroad Materials – Many scrap yards won’t accept railroad spikes, plates, or rails due to theft concerns.
🚫 Stolen or Unverified Metals – If you can’t prove where it came from (especially things like manhole covers, copper wire, or street signs), expect to get turned away.
🚫 Certain Auto Parts (Gas Tanks, Airbags, Catalytic Converters without Proof) – Some yards have strict rules about catalytic converters, and gas tanks usually need to be fully drained and cut open.

This is just a starting list—what other items have you had rejected at the yard? Drop a reply and let’s make this the go-to list for new scrappers!

Looking forward to your input! 👇👇

Radioactive materials are a concern from oil fields. It is assumed this includes any drill pipe.

As far as some of the items on the list, it depends on the scrapyard and the relationship a person has with them. Even though I have all the documentation that is needed, as long as they know the items that might be questionable before unloading they are accepted and know who to send the authorities to. One of the benefits of being in this business for over 15 years.
Give back more to this world than we take.
