[Is it better for me to cut the bands and just cash in the copper?] Is there metal bands around the transformer holding it together?
Are the transformers laminations (the flat metal 'I's & 'E's that are the iron in a transformer) 'stacked'-
or 'interlaced'.
If they are 'stacked' they will be easy to break apart. Then the copper windings just fall out.
If they are 'interlaced' the best way to get to the copper is to use a big anglegrinder to cut off the copper windings from one side of the transformers. And then use a punch & hammer to punch the rest of the copper winding out thru the iron core.
Or use a hammer & a big meat cleaver sort of thing to cut one side of the copper off. Then punch the rest of it out.
