    Cool Is this legit??

While vacationing at the Jersey Shore, we came upon this beauty sitting alongside a clothing donation box. I am not sure of the legalities of someone recovering this for scrap purposes, but it did strike my curiosity. I almost donated our some of our vacation clothing to make room in the truck ; )

Being as though that is a clothing and shoe drop box, meant to stick things inside I would have no moral dilemma taking that. Someone isn't following directions and just used it as a dumping area, the company may not have a use for any of that as the clothing could be handed out in homeless shelters.

Funny thing If you read the actual stipulations of places like this they say.....Any dumping outside this bin is illegal and will be punishable by law......If you read further it also says any thing in and around this bin is property of the bin owner, taking these illegally dumped items would be considered theft.....So legally No you are not allowed to take it......Let your concious be your guide my friends

That whole sign is completely contradictory and most likely has no town, city, county or state statue to back it.
The way it’s worded, if there were items dumped out side of the unit the owner is admitting to illegal dumping.

My opinion is, the sign is nothing more than the owner’s half assed attempt to scare poachers off the stuff.

I think its a shame someone would waste their gas and energy to haul an a/c unit to a clothes drop in the first place. Could have made a scrappers day leaving it at the curbside of their home. Tempting, but again, if I am not familiar with the local rules and regs, I'll pass on it.

First of all, if it is there it probably dosen't work. So do your country a favor and recycle it; it is the new way.
There is one of these by my work, you would be surprized the stuff that goes there.
If it dosen't fit in the little door its outside. You would do these ppl. a favor by taking it, if you don't it only encourages others to do the same. Take it or someone eles will.

I believe it was Bob Dylan who said "In Jersey, everything's legal if you don't get caught".
I don't think that would carry any weight with a cop or a judge though.
Best bet, just leave it when in doubt.

I know someone( a housewife) who was prosecuted for theft over picking up a fifty cent item by a drop spot like that.

I call the number on the boxes, work my way up to the owner/box collectors and explain what I'm offering and what purpose. Usually they are glad to see it be removed free of charge.

The sign, in my humble opinion means. 1 the bin is for clothing and shoes. 2 if CLOTHING and/or SHOES are around or next to the bin, they still belong to the charity. In case some one couldn't put them in (too full/physically unable) or just to lazy. I wouldn't think it includes the other items. Hell, I woulds bet that the owner would be grateful they won't have to haul and dump the other items. I know in my area (Australia) that is the case. People use charity bins as an excuse to dump bulk items FREE, and they end up losing money having to dispose of the non-clothing items.

I am in an agreement with other folks here, that bin is for clothing and shoes, I would have taken that with no problems

Not sure what the discussion is still about.....It is illegal to take these items as they are now property of the bin owner........I thought we didn't condone this behavior on the forum??????

pretty much depends on the mood of the cop that sees you and his opinion of scrappers, may not be illegal but it could be a big pain in the a** just my .02

Like someone mentioned earlier I would just call or ask someone. Even if it looks like it is for the taking, I make sure that im not taking something that someone still wants or that is someone else's property. It takes away any doubt that you might have and many times when you ask people these questions you meet another customer..... "oh you take those, I have 4 at my house. You want to pick them up?"

Dropping off items not collected or not fitting in the box is considered littering by me and you get fined. Many of the boxes have a sign saying no dumping or something to that regards. Not in the box is just trash that makes a mess that the charity has to deal with.
