I buy from them all the time, although I offer cleaning services. So I get the brass shells, copper bullets and the lead shot. There is a danger though. For every 55 gallon drum I buy I usually get around 50 to 100 live bullets. Keep in mind though I have the proper equipment to process this stuff and I'm still scared to be around when those drums are in the shop.
Also, yes this isn't something you can get for free. Shooting ranges are well aware of the value of their stuff.
Just think its weird for ranges to charge you a hefty amount each time you go, then clean up on all the copper, brass and lead they resell that you leave behind. Each time i got to my indoor range i take an ammo box with me and help them with the clean up, walk out with about 20 pounds of brass each time i go so it really dosent end up costing anything plus i dont leave a mess behind for someone else to clean up.
