If I had to break down I would guess that my business does 50% from apartment complexes, 25% Craigslist, 25% call backs.
The items we scrap that we get for free are (unless LARGE QTY., then we pay or offer lunch/beer to the maintenance men)
Stoves
Washers/Dryers (we can sell or Whirlpool & Kenmore models more than scrap to a local dealer)
Refrig/Freezers
Exercise Equip.
Sm Household Appliances
Hot Water Heaters
Iron Tubs/Sinks
AC Units (in my county you have to have permit to scrap ACs, which I have, along with a scrap permit and business license)
etc
We buy:
LG QTY Metals
Barrels of Metals from Auto Shops
Junk Cars/Farm Equip/Pontoon Boats/RVS/Buses
Commercial clean outs (getting all the metal shelving, sometimes appliances, other metals free for removing)
We provide trash haul off services
Real Estate/Eviction clean outs
and we do school fundraisers for recycling (easy $$$$)
I hope that gives you some ideas.
The $$ is out there. We started in January and are solely supporting ourselves off of scrap income.
I am working on a list of things I could be doing while it's raining., sucky day!
(I just posted this in the day in the life of scrapper thread. hehe)
When raining:
Places I can call and offer free pick up services for removal of scrap...
Plumbers---hot water heaters
Fencing companies
Auto shops-offer $$ for 1/2 barrel/full barrel of metal parts they can save (I have several shops already-want more)
Real Estate Agencies/Apt/Leasing brokers to get trash haul offs from evictions etc.
Apt complexes
Research Commercial places that are remodeling...we have done a Lowe's, couple of Blockbusters and a gas station...got all the metal shelving free for removal.
Work on break down of anything set aside to take to scrap yard.
