Adopt A Highway program

Did some research and i'm going to adopt a large section of road in my town to clean up I'm thinking 5 miles. Not a bad deal 4 mandatory days, I can keep all the metal, they will pick up all the trash bags, provide safety gear, trash bags, gloves, safety training. Now this is great for a family deal or group or even recycling businesses but can easily be done solo the minimum in NH is 2 miles of road so 4 mile walk is really not that hard even in the mountains. As a bonus you get a road side sign paid for and installed by the state with your family, group, company name on it. can you say free advertising!!! Now if your wayyy to busy then you can pay a maintenance company to do it for you and still get the free sign or for the larger guys I believe you can apply to be a maintenance provider but didn't really look into this but would guess a fleet of trucks and workers and of course plenty of insurance. It look's like it is going to vary state to state but in my beginning stages everyone that worked for the state I have talked to has been more than helpful. Why not be recognized for the work you do anyways, Clean up your town a little, and make a few bucks

Great idea NH. My partner always says that whenever he hits traffic he gets into the left lane and scans the shoulders and medians for scrap. He said one day he found three wallets, 2 cellphones and a 9mm. He contacted the owners of the wallets and the local pd for the 9mm. Cellphones were crushed so those got recycled. Cleaning up a bit of the roadway can also be a treasure hunt at the same time.

The section of road i applied for is not actually a highway but a decreped old back road through the mountains notorious for vicious frost heaves and drunk rednecks. Let's just say it's going to be all the beer cans and mufflers i can carry outta there. Highways are very clean mostly trash around here the state does a great job sending out crews to keep the highway clean. I will not be able to start this until next summer officially they don't send out crews in the winter. but that's not to say i checked the road out and now need to ask the town about several culverts that have been replaced and set strategically behind some brush all mangled up. those culverts alone will be worth a good chunk they are about 25ft or so the old steel ones that couldn't handle katrina's wrath. sad to see those new ones are made from plastic

They didn't even build the highway through here until the 80's. Ever try to build a road through mountains of solid granite I worked on a road crew for a few years and let me tell you it is slow going we hit granite ledge every 100 ft or so and had to blow it up with dynamite.

I would also say way more people, Cincinnati probably has more people than our entire state lol.
Also wayyy more land for sure.
nhdot will not go into the woods which run along almost all our roads and where the majority of the trash ends up. from the edge of the woods 10-15 ft in will produce a lot of garbage and scrap metal.
But that should mean greater amounts of scrapable material on the side of the road, and a little ways into the woods for me, along with stuff like Brasscatcher's partner was finding there are definitely treasures on the side of the road.

Edit Talked with the town road agent this morning all the culverts are mine i would guess around 200+ lbs a piece so on my first cleanup i'm looking at 1500 lbs of shred guaranteed! Doing good is doing good for me
