Some places will pay more for the compressor separately. The main place I go to does that. I personally cut them open, remove the electric motor then remove the windings. Then you have number 2 copper, and the compressor shell goes into the steel pile. I have removed enough windings from fridge compressors to have filled two 5 gallon buckets full of number 2 copper.

What are you using to cut open the compressor with? Is it easy or tough to get at that motor?

I was using an angle grinder with a cutoff blade to open compressors and each took about 10 minutes of cutting to open them up.
After last haul of copper I invested in a new cutting torch for $129.00 from Northern Tool. I had the tanks already. It took about a minute to cut one open.
Inside there are four bolts holding the motor core in place. I have a cordless impact wrench that zips them out fast like. The core then lifts right out.
    Easy money!

I also use an angle grinder with a metal cutoff wheel. I have found though if I try to cut right through the casing all at once I will go thru wheels much faster, about 1 wheel per casing. If I make a small cut all the way around, then a deeper cut and finally go all the way thru on the third time, the wheel will last much longer.
