    forest preserves

I live walking distance from a forest preserve where, throughout the year people go to drink,(cans) even better during the summer time. I also find that a bunch of contractors, the ones that don't scrap themselves, go to dump their junk. Last week I found about 60 lbs of coated copper wire. It was supposed to go for $2.00 a lb. but the guy at the scrap yard made a mistake and paid me the regular copper price $2.70 a lb. I wasn't about to argue with him. Today I found about 20 lbs. of the same coated copper. I also find that people that live close to the forest preserve prefer to dump their garbage there rather than pay for garbage pickup(cheap homeowners) so I've also found a bunch of small appliances(coffee makers, some tvs, computer monitors) etc. Love the place, especially because its on my way to the scrap yard so I'm passing by anyway.

Find the ranger and talk to him. Let him know what you are doing. Give him your number to call you if someone dumps some crap. It could lead to better things. If it is a large facility , they may have a maintenance department with a large pile of scrap for you as well.

Also, though you wouldn't be a state employee, if they hear about you doing this for free, it could lead to more work throughout the other local state agencies. Might work well indeed. Let those people know and do a job that would make your momma proud, you might just make a customer for life......the state!

Thanks for the idea about talking with the state workers. Actually, on the rare occassion that I was scrapping while garbage was being picked up the garbage men actually thanked me for making their load less heavy. Once again, thanks.
