Thumbs up Always check Auto Parts store dumpsters

Check in the dumpster at Autozone, etc, people are always tossing their spark plug wires, rotors, and other goodies in. Also you surprisingly find a fair bit of unopened new merchandise tossed out as well.
Dumpsters in general anywhere can be good. Get inside to reach the good stuff, don't just stand outside trying to stay clean. Toss bags around to get to the bottom.

If its on their property, which it always is, ALWAYS ask before you dive in. If you get a rude shop manager, they might raise a huge hissy fit about it.

Talked to the Manager of the Auto Zone here today. Funny this topic got brought back up. Talked to him about me going through it and pulling out the things that can be recycled.

He told me, exact words, "Bring me some sort of bin to put next to it and we'll throw our stuff in it for you. Put your name on it, so other folk know, i'll label it for you"

I'm hopin this works out! Would be great! Thank you for the idea.

Hoss, as a suggestion - what I did was buy a bunch of those plastic 55 gallon barrels at an outlet store and put them at garages for them to throw stuff in. Get lids or drill holes in the side near the bottom (a 55 gal barrel half full of rain water is awfully heavy). Stencil your company name on the side. Now you've got something to show the cops that you've got a reason for being there when the store is closed.

    Congratulations!!
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Sometimes you get a extra NZ$20 if all of your steel scrap
(bolts & nuts, shafts & small heavy steel castings like fridge compressors)
is inside a 55 gallon steel drum allready (full, with a lifting chain allready done on it)

Old drums can be picked up for free, Its best to get old ones I guess.

I won't suggest using ex fuel filled drums, they are very dangerous when you go to cut the top off.

Even chisling the top of can be dangerous, as doing the chisling can make a spark & that can ignite the fuel vapour inside it, making a deathly explosion. Same with gas torch or grinder etc.

Put the top end of the drum inside down at the bottom to strengthen it up a bit. I allways chuck in a few bits of sheet metal to dissipate the load on the bottom end.

Cut two hole in the sides near the top & run a old chain thru them & bolt the ends together to use as a lifting sling for forklifts & cranes.

What type of outlet store did you get them from Mick.

I normally get the orange construction buckets from Home Depot. They are like 4.5 per bucket.

Right now, I use the big rubbermaid storage containers that sit in the back of my truck that I put small motors, wire, copper, aluminum, etc in.

I have been going in Auto Repair shops, chains, golf cart stores, collision repair, and talking to manager leaving a flyer. I got same response at a few that another poster mentioned, bring a bin, labeled and we will save our stuff for you. My bf has agreements with several around town who are doing this for him also. My flyers list, in detail, items I am searching for. I also note that there are some things I will consider buying, but not specific on the flyers. See here my first 'bought' load, just the other day, from one of the auto repair shops I am now working with. I still have a TON to learn...I prolly coulda made a lot more if I knew what the heck I was doin'.

Great niche idea. I'll have to start asking some of the places we buy parts from if they need this "service". Probably cut down on their trash bills too.

When picking through autoparts, keep aside spark plugs rated "platinum", the usually have a pointed tip rather then flat in regular ones.
Altough it say "platinum", they actually contain Iridium spot on the tip (where the spark goes).

One more thing to look for are the O2 sensors, they contain varius levels of Platinum... Iv'e assayed some high end O2 sensors that came out 0.1g Platinum per unit.
These are tossed in the thousands.
