New to Scraping.

Hi everyone just wanted to introduce myself.

I would also like to thank everyone for all of their posts, lots of great information in here.

I've only been scrapping for about two months now part-time, with a car (no truck yet) and a one car garage Im using for my workshop. Ive picked up some of the suggested tools like an angle grinder and manual feed wire stripper to name a coulpe of my favorite new additions.

I've made a couple of $100 loads and have about $200 worth of merchandise I need to prep.

I live in a complex with six dumpsters that I pull from. Its amazing how easy it is to find stuff the only problem is I'm still learing what to mess with and whats not worth my time.
I feel like I'm putting too many man hours in right now. Putting so much time in breaking stuff down hopefully Ill get better with experience.

Another place that i find a lot of metal like brass and alum die cast is from a locksmith. This company probably throws 50lbs of mixed metal away a week. This stuff is pretty hard to break down though. A lot of the brass is coated with stainless, I ve been using the angle grinder to expose the yellow brass. There is a big difference in price $2.15lb vs $1lb.

Hi....you are fortunate to have so many dumpsters close by. That makes for a good start. Stay on the forum and keep learning.
I seem to be stuck on the $100 loads,too, but I'm optimistic ! I never leave anything with a motor in it....I love breaking stuff down. Love that copper !

Welcome to the forum. If you happen to come by any computer kind of waste (or anything long those lines) hit me up. I will love to buy it an since I live in dallas as well I can even give you a helping hand here an there.

hey just wondering would that wire stripper work on wire that you would get from say for example a lamp?

I may be wrong, Dmuffin, but I think this stripper is only for stripping the outer layer of cable wire....which a utility knife does just as well. I haven't seen anything under $200 that would serve our purposes for small wiring. You'll find that on another thread submitted by mechanic688.

Strips 18 AWG - 3/4" Wire (1mm - 20mm). It works pretty good, paid $100.

go get em. how well does that stripper work on small wire ?

The smallest wire that I have stripped is 14 AWG braided wire and it worked great on that. It already paid for it-self.

Don't get me wrong I would like to get a fancy auto wire stripping machine but can't justify the expense at this time.

I use to use a utility knife method and for me (a beginner) this stripper was well worth the $100 bucks.

And I am one for the great practical jokes.....I like the classics...Putting vaseline on the trigger for your sawzall, filling your truck full of silly string...lol
